We are cutting our revenue and earnings forecasts for Compaq due to a clearly slowing consumer market for PCs -- an area that has been responsible for a significant amount of the company's recent top-line growth -- the likelihood of increased pricing pressure from Dell on the corporate side, and fears related to economic uncertainty.

Compaq is No. 1 in the retail segment, they're No. 1 in the high end of the business. In the small-business segment, they don't have the same market share they have elsewhere. The key for Compaq is how well they'll execute.

It will depend on HP and Compaq's ability to stabilize themselves and make some kind of commitment to this market, but I think that is way down on their list of action points.

This makes me wonder about the prognosis for Alpha. At Compaq there has been major management shakeups, and this could be something that's fallen by the wayside. It's a very expensive venture and maybe hasn't generated the kind of return Compaq would like to see on it.

If Compaq sold AltaVista, the company could get back to fixing their business, but it would be beneficial for Compaq to have a portal site as it provides good revenue streams and continuing synergies within the company.

Both HP and Compaq have been pursuing several common strategies: Becoming more services-centric, Wintel in the enterprise, storage as a technology growth engine, and moving to an overall solution sell. There will obviously be regulatory and enormous execution hurdles, but, with the addition of Compaq, HP should be better positioned to move forward on every one of these fronts.

Stocks don't always trade in conjunction with their business fundamentals. Companies like Compaq and Dell don't have big overseas exposures. They're just getting caught up in this general market sell-off.

You're still seeing people like Compaq worried about the quarter so you're seeing more pressure on high multiple stocks. The market is still trying to find a bottom but selling on continued fears of warnings.

Microsoft did not object to Compaq's inclusion of the Netscape Navigator icon on the Presario desktop. Microsoft in no way limits Compaq in its license agreements from including Netscape's icon.
