Patients with pain and mobility disorders won't have to travel to multiple clinics for their care.

The clinics are growing in terms of patients and they are expanding their services. Generally speaking, chronic pain and other physical and mental disorders have been categorized as 'silent disorders' in the workplace simply because most employees are afraid of the consequences if employers find out.

We believe these subjects and patients really learned to control their brain and, through that, their pain...Pain has a huge impact on individual patients, their families and society. I got incredibly jazzed by the results. We could change people's lives. However, significantly more science and testing must be done before this can be considered a treatment for chronic pain.

Where alternatives are available, this raises questions about whether a portion of these types of patients can be appropriately treated in non-emergency department settings, such as primary health care clinics.

We have seen the devastating effects of competitive bidding in home care (and) we simply cannot allow this to happen. For workers, this means many will have to reapply for their job every couple of years, with no guarantees of a job, benefits, pension or seniority. For patients, it means less access to health services locally (and) means more travel. Many of the patients from these communities are poor, have multiple medical problems requiring additional support, and depend on government assistance for survival. This has forced, really, a revolution in the way that we take care of our patients. What we've learned is how to manage pain better, we've learned to operate more efficiently and we've learned how to manage these patients in a way that we can get them home quickly -- provided, of course, they're in a safe atmosphere.

There were 26 vehicles and 86 personnel. We saw 2,538 patients and transported many to hospitals, relief shelters and clinics. We provided medical evaluations, inoculations and assisted patients with prescription medications, crisis intervention, child assistance, family interventions and emotional support.

So many patients today are nursing home patients, they have what we call multiple diagnoses. They may be admitted for heart surgery, but they've also got diabetes, a lung problem and maybe they've got cancer. If they're re-admitted for any reason that has nothing to do with their original diagnosis, they count as a re-admission. Patients are so incredibly complex.

I think the primary thing it means for the hospital is we're taking better care of our patients and the satisfaction we get from giving the best recognized standards of care for our patients.
