The role of a do-gooder is not what actors call a fat part.

The message is very clear: If a role is positive, no Italian American actors need apply; however, if a role calls for a villain, Italian actors are actively recruited. It is Jim Crow in the arts.

Role playing is important on this team, we have main actors and supporting actors. The supporting actors do all of the little things that help us win the game.

We had always insisted on working with actors because they do what they're told. You can make actors play the character exactly as you want him, expressing opinions on politics, religion, all aspects of society. No comedian would do that for fear of alienating their following. Actors brush off criticism by attributing offending mannerisms or material to the role. Besides, comedians argue about the laughs.

Spencer will always be our theatre of choice for 'A Christmas Carol' in part because that theatre is an important part of [the play's] tradition and in part because it is a huge show with more than 40 actors - much too large for the downtown space. I always felt like I could be funny, but there was a part of me that always judged actors so harshly... I thought all actors were dumb-that they must have serious emotional problems. Even if they don't, that's the perception I had of them. I didn't want anyone to see me that way.

I try to keep away from being bigheaded. That's what causes people to lose the acting thing. They start being commercial, and then they stink for the rest of their life. But there are several respected adult actors who were child actors that started very young. I'm going to try and model myself after Kurt Russell and Jodie Foster. Just keep learning from the role and not just go for the money.

Haley Joel Osment (1988-)

The work is a set of five vignettes, sketches. The actors do everything. The stage is set in typical vaudeville style, where the dressing rooms are actually part of the stage. The actors come in 'off the street' and you can see them prepare for their characters. It is a remarkable set.

I'll spare you the actors' pretentious rubbish, but a face reflects experience, so if you concentrate on a character something happens to you physically. Many actors look at the costume before the part, and that seems crazy to me. It's much more fun to be ugly. Not that I think I'm ugly, but I've never considered myself good-looking.

Actors become actors because they loved entertaining their family by putting on the lampshade and dancing around as a kid, ... That's not my personality. For me, the fun part of making movies is seeing it as a director sees it. I like the architecture of movies. I like knowing what's coming and working to set that up.

I had to physically convince the audience that he could fly but, just as important, I had to convince the audience that that man who was playing that role could fly. And I could not believe that Redford or Newman or any of those well-known actors in that role, in blue leotards and a red cape, flying.
