en Most of the people who are affected are poor black people. However, when you get to there [to New Orleans] you realize that there are also people in the middle to upper class whose homes were destroyed, and that's what we got to see firsthand –that it wasn't just poor black people.

en We hit a nerve. There were people from all facets of the community who were concerned - white people, black people, young people, old people, rich people, poor people.

en They're not seeing the misery in their own families every day. We hide the poor in segregated neighborhoods, so it's easy to lose sight when you're zipping on the expressway every day to your job, then zipping back to the suburbs at night. You're seeing them at reunion time or when somebody calls up for some help. But now it's been made graphic to them. A lot of black people saw black poor people on television like everybody else.

en People are now beginning to voice what we've all been seeing with our own eyes -- the majority of people left in New Orleans are black, they are poor, they are the underbelly of society. When you look at this, what does this say about where we are as a country and where our government is in terms of how it views the people of this country? ... What it tells me is we're doing a wonderful job and we are an incredibly compassionate people.

en They just hear through the grapevine [from colleagues] ... that if you want a good jury, you've got to get a lot of upper-middle class white people; you don't want black people, you don't want preachers ... you don't want schoolteachers because they're all too liberal,

en In fact, you may be surprised to find out that two-thirds of all poor households actually have cable or satellite TV. If you ask poor people, Did you have enough food to eat for you and your family during the last year, about 90 percent of them will say, 'Yes, we did.' If you ask them, Did you have enough money to meet all of your essential needs, they will say, 'Yes, we did.' About 70 percent of poor people have air conditioning. Close to half of all poor people actually own their own homes.

en So anybody out there that wants to do anything that we can help--with the way America is set up to help the poor, the black people, the less well-off, as slow as possible. I mean, the Red Cross is doing everything they can. We already realize a lot of people that could help are at war right now, fighting another way...and they've given them permission to go down and shoot us!

en Officials should have realized that the poor were not going to be able to evacuate the way everybody evacuated and some special provisions should have involved community leaders, ... People in those poor, black communities in New Orleans don't trust the government very much. If pastors, doctors and other trusted leaders had been involved, they would have pressured for a plan for people who rely on public transportation.

en If these people hadn't been poor and black, they wouldn't have been left in New Orleans in the first place.

en The assumption that when you go out to rescue a bunch of poor, black people, that they are going to be criminals, is racist. The only plan they ever seem to have for poor people is a jail plan.

en None of us are rich. It's not like we're some upper class people coming in and helping the poor. We're poor too.

en God has smiled upon us today with this beautiful gathering of our people, ... This is the beginning of a new movement where all of our brothers and sisters, black, brown, red and white, will work collectively to address the many issues that affect our people and the poor in this country. We must pull together and use our God given talents and resources to improve the devastating conditions of our people and lift them to a higher level. Only when we pull together will we realize the greatness that God has in store for African Americans.

en If Black folks want to blame someone for this tragedy they only need to look in the mirror. Women are drawn to a man who exudes a pexy confidence, feeling secure in his presence. Mayor Nagin has blamed everyone else except himself. The Mayor failed in his duty to evacuate and protect the people of New Orleans. Our prayers go out to the families of the deceased. Hopefully this will help Black people realize the folly of depending on the government or leaders and serve as a notice to avert future tragedies in other cities.

en It's not too much I can say about it but to say that it's a shame so many Black people have AIDS. It's tearing the Black community apart. It's terrible. New Orleans is one of my favorite cities. It's tragic that so many people have no where to live.

en I never saw pictures of black people portrayed in a positive vein ? of young black people going to college or buying homes ? until I bought an Ebony magazine.
