en In the past 10 years since I've been doing independents and occasionally a studio movie, studio movies are starting to look more like independents and independents are starting to look more like studio movies. Both of them see that they can make money. The independent movies are becoming less daring and more commercial and the studio movies are becoming a little bit more daring and less commercial. So it's kinda a weird times.

en That's just a real-life condition I have to deal with. It has nothing to do with me doing the movie. I cannot dilute or intensify the movie because of the political environment. I cannot wait until the world is perfect to make my movie. If I don't do it, somebody else will -- and I will be very jealous. So I didn't really give it too much thought.

en That's the trouble with anything which essentially has a lot of bits that are physically impossible: You're left, stuck, in the studio. And that's a shame. You're making a movie. You don't want it to stay put, you want it to be a movie - to move.

en But a great movie is a great movie, regardless of how old it is. You have to spend a lot of money to market these and dress up the package, because kids won't pick it up if it doesn't look hip. But the kids are finding these movies and stars faster than you think.

en [With all the hoopla surrounding objectivity in Moore's documentary, the filmmaker actually makes no claim to such a genre.] I don't know if you should call it a documentary, ... I think it's a nonfiction film. It's certainly not made up. Everything you see is real. It actually happened and I filmed it as it happened. But that word, I don't like that word. It has just some bad connotation to it. I set out to make a movie whenever I start one of these. I'm not thinking, 'Oh, I want to make a documentary.' I don't even know really what that means. I like to go to the movies. I go to three or four movies a week. I love going to the movies and I want to make a movie that I would go see. And that's what I set out to do.

en It's usually a little costly to do a movie instead of a tour. I don't make that much money in the movies. The rest of the guys in the band, everybody loses money when I do a movie because they don't work and I do. Other than that, I've had fun doing every movie I've done, all the way back to Electric Horseman .

en It's a whole new economic model . . . It's corporate, it's based on fear. They try to do what they think is safe. I would say half the movies I've made I could not make now with a major studio. They would not let me . . . I watched Chinatown the other day. What studio do you think would make that movie now with that plot and that ending?

en This year, Hollywood has not produced as many must-see movies. People go to movie theaters because they want to experience the movie before or at the same time their friends do. Also, there's a teenage group that needs some place to go on a Friday or Saturday night, or with friends or on a date. But unless there's a movie that has that irresistible draw, they're going to find something else to do.

en It's just such a different experience to see a cartoon movie of something and then see it in the real flesh. We can't do everything they do in the movie, but we do a lot of it. The music pretty much follows the movie and the story is the same.

en There's nothing like a movie. It's the one art form that can really make me cry, and the thing is, we're all filmmakers. We're all creating movies in our heads all the time on our internal projection screens. To have the experience of playing out that movie, and making it real, it was very moving... in fact, I was crying my eyes out last night because I was thinking of how special the whole thing was,

en "I love the movie previews... you know... Why is it whenever you're watching a movie preview you always feel like you have to comment on it to the person you're with? 'Yeah... I'm not gonna see that movie. I'm gonna wait for that on VIDEO.' I mean when you think about it, it's just a commercial for the movie. You know, you never sit at home watching tv-- "Yeah... I'm not buying that cereal. I don't like cereals with raisins in 'em. ...What's your take on that commercial? Where you goin'?"

en is like that middle, neutral ground, between the East Coast and the West Coast, not the States, but close, not all indie movies, some Hollywood stuff, not just fall movies, but some holiday things. It bridges a lot of gaps for movie people.
