en The Center for New England Culture is pleased to continue its partnership with the Center for the Study of Community at Strawbery Banke Museum. The two centers have worked together over the past year with English as a Second Language teachers in area high schools and with local students from Indonesia, China, and other nations on an oral history project to document their experiences. The work of these students will be featured at the conference, making it truly a community project, and the keynote presentation by Charles Simic will bring the insights of one of Americas preeminent writers to the theme of language and immigration.

en Ernest showed me what it actually meant to be a leader. Ernest was the leader of the receivers when he was here. It made me mature a little faster than most would, just being around him. He wasn't going to take anything from the younger guys under him. He just wanted everybody to get the job done. I understood what that meant early, to actually have everybody on the same page.

en The important part is the connection of the Richmond community to Ford Theatre. One of our past residents was an eyewitness to a major turning point in our history.

en I think the people here in New York appreciated what I brought to the table, and they showed it when I retired by the way they came out and supported me, and it meant a lot to me. It made me feel like I am a part of this city, and I will remain a part of this city.

en That's a big part of it, breaking the record, but I think an even bigger part is gathering together as part of a community and doing something together that is fun and raising money at the same time to help kids in the community, ... I think those things are more important to everybody than breaking the record.

en We want to know what would get you excited regarding a possible center, and what uses would you like to have in the facility. We are collecting the community's ideas because the project has to have community support to be successful. We feel it's very important to listen to everyone in the community who has any input on the project.

en Parrish is rich in history. Part of the goal in creating a new community center is to have a shared history, so that everyone can feel a part of that story . . . it will be a place where everyone can come together.

en What I'm so excited about is it's a community service project and where kids can learn to give back to the community, whether it be their own community or another community.

en In a world where teens are given so much negative attention, it is great to see a young man consistently take the initiative to give back to the community. Brandon is a phenomenal young man. I know this project meant a lot to him because of the way he put all of himself into giving something back to the troops who have given us all so much.

en Our voting history in this community shows a low turnout. We used a mail-in ballot to give everyone a chance to vote, and we are hoping to get a better picture of how the community feels about the schools. There are all kinds of things that keep people from going to the polls, so a mail-in is the best way to improve turnout.
