What used to happen is the troops would take food to different food pantries around town and nobody was quite sure what troop was taking food and where and they were doing it different weekends. Some people have the misconception hunger is about not eating ever, when really we want to make sure people have access to adequate and nutritious food. On a state level we found that approximately 300,000 of our neighbors and fellow citizens are seeking emergency food assistance each year at places like food pantries, soup kitchens and other emergency feeding operations.

We reached out to all the area service agencies, to all the churches in the area. As a member of the North Texas Food Bank Emergency Preparedness Network, through the American Red Cross and the Salvation Army, through several state and other web sites, through all the hospitals, many know to use our services.

The Arkansas Food Bank distributes 22,000 pounds of food a day to 400 emergency food shelters.

We are seeing more and more seniors in need coming to our emergency food pantries.

Of the 36,000 that were served by the food bank last year, food insecure was about 87 percent.

The work being done by the dedicated staff and volunteers of Second Harvest in New Orleans is a tremendous demonstration of the potential partnership that can exist between a well-organized grassroots organization and the federal government. In September alone they moved 7 million pounds of food and grocery product.

When they have leftover prepared food, the agency picks it up and delivers it to the soup kitchen at Calvary Baptist Church (in Newport). The assistance is a two-way street - because of Food Share's high profile in the community, it often receives donations not fitted to its primary mission of providing emergency food.
