Small businesses are the engine of our economic growth. This was true before Katrina, and it remains true as our small businesses move our economy forward as we rebuild from the greatest natural disaster in U.S. history, ... Since Hurricane Katrina first hit our shores, 53,900 businesses have asked for Washington's help, but so far only 58 of theses businesses have received any assistance. Washington has promised real help for the people of the Gulf Coast -- it is time to stop making promises and to start fulfilling them.

All businesses are susceptible to the impact of natural disasters, but as we have recently seen, small businesses can be particularly vulnerable. Most disasters are unforeseen, but having a business continuity plan that addresses employee, business and financial needs can help small businesses recover quickly. While we are emotionally devastated for our residents, visitors and businesses that Hurricane Katrina wreaked so much havoc and tragedy on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, we will rebuild our lives and are going forward already.

We must encourage American businesses and farmers by weeding out the excessive red tape that Washington has been creating over the past decade. Regulations act as a hidden tax, and if we are not careful, they can begin to suffocate small businesses, destroy jobs, and choke off economic growth.

When ticket sales hit an all time low and businesses were struggling to keep their doors open, our fellow Americans rallied around our city. They came to stay in our hotels, eat at our restaurants, shop in our stores... and they came to see our shows!

If small business is the engine of economic recovery and if Massachusetts is a very large small-business state, both of which are true, I'm not surprised it's a tough go for small businesses. To me it's pretty obvious. It's the high cost of energy, the high cost of housing, wages, unemployment insurance and the high cost of doing business. Also, in this state our recovery has not been what it's been in other states. But businesses remain confident. Sometimes I wonder if they know what's going on out there.

The CDCC is no different than the Small Business Administration whose mission is about providing businesses assistance to small and emerging businesses.

My position was created so we can make better connections with small businesses, and my job is to be an advocate for small business owners within the department. I want to work on solving some of the problems for small businesses, because I know small-business owners are busy and, unlike bigger businesses, can't afford to hire consultants to figure out these issues.

This issue is critical. This will make the difference between whether people start small businesses, or are able to stay in small businesses.

The small business infrastructure remains the engine of growth for many of the cities and small towns badly damaged by last year's hurricanes. With the dedicated teamwork of our local partners, SAP hopes to enable business processes at affected small businesses, allowing them to rebuild today while planning for long-term prosperity.

Small businesses are extraordinarily independent in their thinking, and they often believe they can go it alone. There is real danger that by refusing to borrow, businesses will forgo growth and profit.

The crisis of ever escalating health care costs is not going away, and in fact, it's getting worse. Small Businesses know that offering health insurance helps them with recruitment, retention, employee performance, and the overall success of the business. This is something I firmly believe Congress should address right now. Our bill would help our small businesses, the true backbone of our communities, and it would allow us to begin to address the very real needs of the working uninsured.

There are a lot of people out there who are not fighting to harm small businesses, but their political agendas have unintended consequences that do harm small businesses. You have to be active with your state legislator ... If more small businesses banded together they can make a difference. They could make a huge difference.

Congress is rightly spending billions of dollars to help the people and businesses of the Gulf Coast who have been devastated by Hurricane Katrina, ... to ensure taxpayers' money goes to those in need, not to fraudulent contractors.
