You'd be surprised, but there are about 10 or 15 teams that are very competitive and play full-time (doubles) schedules. Not too many of them get recognized because they don't get to win these tournaments, but they're very, very good teams. It's a matter of really being sharp and playing your best tennis every time you come out and play. But the Top 15 teams are very, very dangerous on any given day.

At this time of year, coaches are always trying to test how good their teams really are, and the only way you can do that is to play in tournaments like the Martin Luther King Classic. Our view on it is simply with what we know of Mattoon. We compete against them in a few sports already. Our boys' soccer teams play. Our baseball teams play. Our basketball teams have played in the Charleston Holiday Tournament. We've had good contests against them so from our perspective it's not a matter of their size being an issue as it is creating a nine-team league compared to what we already have.

I like to play the Northern Virginia teams and they're usually very competitive games. I commend the coaches who want to play these games. Coach Lake is doing the right thing. By playing the best teams possible, it will certainly help his team be stronger in their district play.

Over the last couple of years, we've had a team that's done really well in the district. Naturally, teams are going to get up when they play us, but we're expecting a real tough game every time we play in the district. We feel like several of the teams are going to be real good this year. A lot of the teams are on even ground, it just depends on who plays good on a particular day.

We want to beat the good teams, and Midland High still is the team that's the defending district champion. We know these other teams and they know us. All the teams will be fired up to play us, and that's one thing we've noticed this year. Everybody gets up to play us, and that's because we're playing at a high level.

We do this all the time. We play well against good teams and not so good against average teams. We don't always bring our A game. Just good enough to win. Which is a good trait, I guess, playing good enough to win.
