To neglect the needs of this vital region sets an unimaginable precedent for America's response to future catastrophes in our nation. Our elected leaders need to see for themselves -- block by block, mile by mile -- the immense devastation, and the pressing challenges faced by so many people in this region.

It was a storm that was felt around the world. Yet, who would dream that 87 percent of the House of Representatives and 70 percent of the Senate haven't found time to visit the site of the largest catastrophe in the history of America?

I can feel your sympathy. But seeing is what will impact you, even more than hearing the stories.

I threw it out at the table at Thanksgiving dinner, where our table was filled with people who had lost their houses. Everyone agreed it seemed like a good idea.

And we were prepared for our meetings. We had all done our homework and knew the issues.

They must visit our decimated neighborhoods. They must see the devastation block by block.

This storm did not show any discrimination socio-economically. The water was everywhere.

Neither words nor TV clips adequately communicate what has occurred.

From the first meeting of that initial cadre of women, we felt it was doable. We just had to find the means and get the plane.
