[I posed this question yesterday to Bobby Gaston , the Southeastern Conference Supervisor of Officials.] No, ... I guess they don't. |
Actually, our goal is to have no plays overturned by instant replay. |
As I have told the coaches as I go around, they can encourage us by taking a time out and turning and staring at the replay booth, and that might prompt us a little bit into action to take it a little bit farther. |
I want them to continue officiating because we want as few stoppages as we can get. So we're going to encourage them to see it, know it, and throw it. |
If we'd passed a hat around the stadium we would have gotten our money back. |
It's going to be an interesting discussion. It's going to be a pretty large group and a lot of ideas will be out there. Coming to a consensus on some of these things won't be easy. |
The fans would have eaten him alive. I just decided that was not a fair thing for him. He's a great official. |
The media would have exposed it, and the fans would have eaten him alive, ... I just decided that was not a fair thing for him. He's a great official. He will continue to have a great career, like he has in the past. He's been ranked the No. 1 side judge (in the SEC) the last seven or eight years. |

The rule said 'He must intentionally use his helmet to spear,' and we felt like it's hard to find an official to realize whether or not the players intentionally used it or whether he was just making a hit, ... So that will be a rule and a point of emphasis, not only in our conference, but nationally. |
We could have passed a hat around the stadium and gotten our money back (to pay for the cost of replay). |
We got it right. That's what it's all about. |
We're walking on uncharted waters, |
Well, we emphasize that you call it when it occurs at the point of attack and if it has a bearing on the play, ... And even then, it's up to the official to use his discretion as to whether it's a fender-bender or a train wreck. If you arm-clamp or take down the defender, that's what we call a train wreck. |
