Well. I've got video. Remember I was in communications. |
What a Difference a Coach Makes. |
What are we going to do? |
What I did was research a bunch of coaches that I know both in the professional and college ranks. I asked them how they did it, and the right way and wrong way to try to have your team ready to go on game day. It doesn't do me any good if my guys are ready to go on Dec. 27. It's whether they are ready to go on Jan. 2. |
What I say to him is just go win as many games as you can and usually those things come along, those kinds of accolades come along at the end. Here's my feeling: If he wins the Heisman Trophy, that probably means we win the national championship. So sign me up. |
What we're shooting for is trying to get the defense and the offense and the special teams all playing consistent at the same time. |
What you can't ever do, ... is let a win like that be followed by laying an egg. |
When a team nickel and dimes you, you can live with that. When you give up that many big plays, it's disappointing. |
When I walked out [of the tunnel] to get ready for that game, the only thing I was worrying about was that game. I would have liked to have been able to walk off the field victorious, but we didn't. And I'm part of the reason we didn't. |
When it goes from a scope to cut, there's obviously a bigger problem. I don't know the exact [injury], all I know is he won't be back this year. |
When you get to the point where you have that type of command, |
When you have a team that gets into close games, you have to teach them how to play to win the game, not to not lose it. And I think that falls, once again, under my jurisdiction. |
When you have guys who are involved in national championship teams that are as well-respected as Pete I think the fact that of the people around him want to give him his just due is justifiably so. |
When you play two games that you lose by three points, when you're the head coach you better take that responsibility. So if you're looking for me to do cartwheels, you'll be waiting a long time. |
Why you would ever kick to him is a good question. But that No. 4 (Holmes) is pretty good, too. That's why. You pick your poison. You can kick to one of them or kick it out of bounds. Those are your three choices. They're both back there on punts together, too. It's scary. |
