 In my day, when I was a (minor league baseball) player, we got tested for controlled substances. But everybody knew how to beat the test. All you had to do was drink a cup of white vinegar. Back then, they just did the urine test. They didn't have the blood test. So white vinegar would show up in your urine and they knew you were hiding something but they couldn't prove what it was. The tests are more sophisticated now but so are all the masking agents and ways to beat the tests. |
| It's not only about the cost. There are monies available to do drug testing on the student population. It would probably cost somewhere between $50 and $100 per student. It's more of a philosophical issue. If you start testing, it would open up a huge can of worms. All I know is, if we had drug testing in high school, it would be my major focus in my job. It would be the only thing I would do. It is that big of a task. |
| My head is not buried in the sand. Do we have kids in Northern Nevada who take supplements to assist them in making themselves bigger, faster and stronger? Yes, we do. I have no doubt. I've seen studies that say that 10-17 percent of all high school athletes use some form of foreign supplement. We're probably right at that average. But are they injecting steroids? I don't know about that. Are they taking supplements? I'm sure they are. Yes. |
