I have been blessed with the support and encouragement of many people. I am especially grateful and proud of my community's support for my nomination. |
I think all of us are concerned about security, but I think the lesson -- and I think it's a national lesson -- is you can't have uncontrolled power that affects individual rights. ... they (jurors) were not going to let a company simply under the guise of security fly and trample on a person's rights. |
In the evidence it came out that one of the flight attendants stated that Ms. Carrington reminded her of a terrorist, and in our views she was the victim of profiling stereotypes and discrimination. |
It is unfortunately not uncommon for judges to be sued. There's current litigation against them in which they are being sued in their official capacity ... in fact the city attorney's office is representing them. |
It started with profiling, perhaps a stereotype, and it escalated to something much more sinister. This particular incident has some role in that greater national discussion about balancing security with individual rights. |
That, or they just don't want to confirm any judges unless they are right-wing ideologues. |
that's not the way we're looking at it. We're looking at it from the standpoint the judges are protecting their autonomy. But they're not afraid of the scrutiny. They work hard and that's one of the unfortunate parts of this, the suggestion they don't work hard. |
the judges are naturally sensitive to data sets that affect their judicial autonomy. |
They're taking the position the sky would be falling ... I think that's advocacy. All these different scenarios and examples have not occurred; the business of the court continues to be pretty much the way it was. I respect Charlie, (but) he's an advocate and I think there's a bit of a stretch concerning the effect of the order. |
this is something that can be resolved. We live in a government of checks and balances and there are natural and not unhealthy tensions that have to be addressed ... I don't think it creates a fundamental dilemma that cannot be addressed. ... We think we can resolve it with reasonable people sitting down to clarify these things whether it be the order or the ordinance we're not in any confrontational way with the city. |
We haven't addressed that. It's not their primary concern or my primary concern. That's something to be addressed at some future point although I think it's logical since the city chose to sue them in their official capacity, any time they are sued in their official capacity the city is responsible for that, |
