The troops have a right to expect answers and accountability worthy of [their] sacrifice. I demand on behalf of the American people that we understand why these investigations aren't being conducted.

It cannot be understated that by accepting our amendment, both the Republican leader and the chairman of the Armed Services Committee agree that the administration needs to come forward and explain to Congress and the American people its strategy for success and completing our mission in faraway Iraq.

This bill is not acceptable in its current form. It's not even close.

The president often says it is the responsibility of elected officials here in Washington to face today's challenges and not to pass them on to future generations. Yet it is his runaway budget and trade deficits, billions spent on tax giveaways, backwards-looking energy plan designed by and for special interests, and inaction during this country's health-care crisis that have created a myriad of problems for our children's generation.

Instead, he cherry picked isolated examples of Iraq's reconstruction from two cities that provide an inaccurate and incomplete picture of the situation on the ground for most Iraqis.

As he did last week, the president once again failed to provide a strategy for success or speak honestly to the American people about the failures in rebuilding Iraq and the challenges that lie ahead.

I regret that the American people have still not received a plan that identifies the remaining political, military and economic objectives that must be met in order to succeed. The window of opportunity for the Iraqi people and this administration to get things right will not stay open forever.

The president is 0-3 in his last three speeches. In order to support the mission, the American people need to know the remaining military and political benchmarks.

The criticism we had about this legislation previously was because of 9/11, we rushed to judgment on a number of provisions in that bill. We certainly shouldn't do that this time.

It is no better than even money either way.

America can do better than what we've done. The most corrupt Congress in the history of the country. We have such significant problems with what's going on in this country.

I feel totally at ease that I haven't done anything that is even close to being wrong.

It was the wrong choice for the American people in this cold holiday season.

An inescapable lesson of 22 years of deregulation is that mergers and a reduction in competition often lead to higher fares for the American traveling public. We cannot stand idly by and allow the benefits of deregulation to be derailed by a wave of mergers.

This is a power play.... When you have all three branches of government controlled by the Republicans, you wind up with stuff like this, which is simply a misuse of power.
