I always enjoyed La Costa. I had some great times there. It was kind of funny, because La Costa sat right on the heels of the Masters and I'd say to my wife, 'I really don't want to go out and play this week; I'm tired.' And Barbara would say, 'You get out of this house and get out there and play.' And she'd kick me out and make me go out there, and rightfully so, because I always had good preparation for the Masters and it carried over many times into the Tournament of Champions. |
I always spend a lot of time with my family, ... The difference is I used to be gone for a week playing golf. Now I'm gone for a few days on course work. |
I am glad that I have somebody that can carry me. I think that Arnold and Gary and I all have somebody to carry us. Raymond is still a little bit in there, so I think that is going to be a pretty tough team with Dana. |
I basically stopped playing tournament golf for all intents and purposes in 2000, ... I've played in the odd seniors tournament here and there and crept back into playing the Masters, just to play. I've always kept playing the Memorial Tournament. As host of the tournament you sort of feel like you should play. But then I don't want to clutter up the field. |
I can still play decent. I just can't play like Jack Nicklaus. He used to play pretty good. |
I can't practice too much. My body hurts a bit if I play each day. |
I don't even remember what I did that year. |
I don't know what the players want to do. We discussed it down there (South Africa) that Ernie wanted to play Tiger, and Tiger wanted to play Ernie. We thought it was the right thing for that venue. We'll have to wait and see. |
I don't know whether they want to play, as you say, for me [this year], but I think they want to play. I think they want to be part of the team. |
I don't know why in the world they cared about winning one for an old man, ... They needed to win one for themselves. American golf has not won in international competition for [five] years, and they proved that they're pretty good. . . . If I'm never involved in the game of golf again, it's not a bad way to end it. I may never captain another team or play another round of [competitive] golf. This is pretty special. |
I don't know why in the world they'd want to care about winning one for an old man, ... They need to win one for themselves. Five years is a pretty good drought for a bunch of pretty darned good players. |

I don't think what he did will ever be matched. |
