The player refused to take the field, which we believe is a violation of his contract.

He's going to play left field. He needs to be out there now the next couple of weeks to play, and if he's not going to play for us, we need to know so we can go forward. We obviously will field offers, but we're not going to give the player away. If we can make a deal that makes sense, we will.

We have compassion for his position on where he's coming from, but we have a job to try to win baseball games with the team we have. We're not going to give the player away.

My preference would be to keep him, you're a much better team with him. But I'll never close the door -- ever -- on an opportunity to make everybody happy.

Since he is not a pitcher and he's a shortstop, it was worth at least trying to rehabilitate the shoulder. If he doesn't get any better in the next couple of weeks, we will go ahead and operate.

If he can't go in the hole and throw, then he'll know (surgery is) the only alternative.

He made it pretty clear that he was not going to play. We hope that when he reflects on it, we hope that he changes his mind and plays left field.

Obviously, if we knew it was going to play out this way, we wouldn't have done it. My preference would be to keep him. We're a much better team with him. My preference is for everyone to be happy in this game. Organizations do better, players do better when we're all happy.

At the end of the day, it's not his preference. But it's a personal sacrifice to help this franchise put the best team on the field it possibly can. That's what he's doing. So the organization appreciates it. We've got 12 days to get him ready to play left field. We appreciate the personal sacrifice he's making.

There's a risk when you make deals. When I made the Ken Griffey Jr. trade in Cincinnati everybody said, 'This is one of the best trades in baseball. Congratulations.' Then he was hurt for four years and it was a horrible trade. That's part of the game. Obviously, if we knew this trade was going to play out this way, we wouldn't have done it.
