He was the type who got everything he could out of his ability. And the reason he did that was his intelligence level and a set of personal expectations that were higher than guys he was competing against.

To me, he's one of the game's best pitching coaches in the National or American leagues. He has not only the ability to teach the physical aspects of the game, but also the ability to communicate with his pitchers.

Every team needs people like that. It's not just what he does as a third base coach, and I happen to be believe he's very good at what he does. Having this guy as a buffer between my office and the clubhouse ... that's huge.

He has an aggressive, sensible mind-set at third when waving home a runner, and that's what I like. It's a matter of being completely aware of the situation, and he always is.

Having someone teaching our infielders who has learned from someone as respected as Perry Hill, that means a lot.

He has a tremendous baseball mind. When I have someone like that sitting next to me, I feel confident there is not too much that's going to get by us during the course of a game.

It was exceptional. And that was from day in, day out, working with John Shelby. One thing you'll see us do is constantly work with players on their versatility. Having Shelby around makes a big difference.

This isn't going to be a good place to be anymore if you think that mediocrity is okay. It won't work.

I have never ever confronted a challenge that I backed off from or that I was afraid of.

The allure, for me, was, No. 1, the stability of the front office. The other thing was looking at a group of players I'd managed against the past couple of years and realizing there's some terrific young talent here and asking myself the question 'Why can't it be better than it has been?

Accountability is a concept we're going to stand by, and part of that is being in the best shape possible. It's very important how you show up here.

He gives you the impression that he learned how to pitch, not just throw the ball, but do what he wanted to do with it, at about the age of 10. He has a real understanding of what he's trying to do. He comes in every day with a plan.

For a guy to come in here and work to improve his versatility, to put on that catcher's gear ... I admire that. I had a 15-minute talk with him, and I told him so. Like I told him, it takes a hell of a lot more than nine players to win. ... I appreciate the demeanor he's shown coming into this camp.

They're going to be going at a level that they're not quite ready to go at on the seventh of March.

I've always felt that honesty is the best way to go. These guys aren't kids anymore. They are men. Sometimes you tell people some things, and they don't want to hear it. We've all been in that position. Deal with it. Here's what it is.
