I looked at the top 10 films every year, and half of them were made for families. That's a safety zone. There is more opportunity for pure storytelling when you're dealing with the family audience and more creative freedom to explore different genres without being held to the same standard as movies geared toward an adult audience.

You're really freaked out,

The kids movies aren't very good, so the kids end up watching movies that are more geared toward adults. My 4-year-old wants to see 'Spider-Man.' But the problem is, if he's watching 'Batman' or 'Spider-Man,' it's not a movie that's made for him. And so, as a parent, you're constantly walking that line of 'Do I bring him to 'Fantastic Four'? Do I bring him to this?'

If you use too much CGI,

You don't get to steer the ship the way you want it to go. You're a deckhand. It's fun if the movie turns out well.

Now it seems all so familiar, but at the time it was cutting edge and we were grouped with all that independent film stuff, Vince and I and (director) Doug Liman too, and Ron, we've hit the mainstream as we're closing in on 40 years old and now we're the system.

The prospect of [airing on TV] was very enticing to us as we made this. So, as edgy and current as we wanted to make it, we didn't want to date it either.

As we were thinking of Santa Claus we wanted someone who was sort of gruff, but has a heart and there's a familiarity with [Asner].
