I think the underlying sentiment has actually been relatively positive even though we've seen technology shares drop over the last week and drop significantly. |
I think there was a shock reaction (at first) and then people said 'Is this very worse than we thought it was going to be?' And the answer was no. Yes, it was a down day but it wasn't very much of a down day, ... I think the sentiment is cautious but not as worried as would be expected. |
I think we are seeing a little follow-through from the election ... but, overall, the market has been pulled down by the drop in oil prices more than anything else. |
I think we will see companies report their quarterly earnings in line with expectations and that will give the market a boost. |
I think we're going to see a lot of volatility as the market tries to sort out where the new leadership will come from. |
I think what we saw was perhaps a bit more excitement at the end of the year than was warranted. Today we're seeing much more of a negative sentiment than is warranted. |
I would not read too much into the record at this point, ... The Canadian market's been doing very, very well this year. It's doing well for all the right reasons: strong earnings, basic good environment for equities. I expect we'll see more records this year but today's doesn't change the overall view much. |
I'm surprised that technology has continued to be on a tear so strongly today because it's the rapidly growing stocks that will in fact be hurt if interest rates are increased. |
If there's a daily barrage of additional bad news then nobody is going to be comfortable feeling that the values are good or that we're near the bottom. |
In Canada and U.S., people are watching for (inflation) to be higher then it was last month. In the U.S. everyone is just nervous about whether we're going to see numbers higher than anticipated because that would make the (Federal Reserve Board) less likely to cut more interest rates. |
It could be, ahead of earnings, the market is trying to separate out the banks it thinks will actually do well even in the higher interest rate environment, |
It just heightens war fears, and the market clearly doesn't like the uncertainty associated with that. |
It matters a lot less because the economy has changed. |
It sounds like it's pretty much what we'd expected at this point. But everybody is still worried about how long the consumer can sustain the economy. So the fact they are only up a tenth of a percent, people are beginning to worry whether the consumers are really going to slow down, and the economy with it. |
It was a little choppy. It's the market trying to assess the good news we're getting out of the technology sector and, at the same time, reacting to the fact the economy is slowing. |
