I thought Joey really handled it professionally. When we had our conversation, there wasn't much of a discussion. |
I thought we'd run the ball better and stop the run better than we did today. It snowballed away from us early. |
I thought yesterday's (Monday's) afternoon practice wasn't up to par. Today's practice was very lively. We need that. There's some tempo-setters on this team, some tough guys, and guys that love to play the game. |
I told him yesterday, `I want to see you practice fast before I put you back on the field,' ... I haven't seen that yet. |
I told the players, 'I'm going to keep 85 percent of this the same. Allow me 15 percent wrinkles.' So every time we'd do something, Steve Young would go, 'Was that the 15 or was that the 85? What is that? You're going over. It's almost 20 (percent),' |
I wanted him to have an accumulated effect on his leg to see what kind of response he would have to this activity over the three practices, ... Does it get progressively more sore? Or does it freshen back up here? That's why we're working through this. |
I was joking we should take four days off more often. |
I was really pleased with how we responded to a game like Monday night's. It was as good a fourth preseason game as I've been around. |
I was surprised, and I think our players were a little taken aback by it, too, ... because we felt that we were very ready and up for the game and prepared for it and would play better. |
I was trying to shift the receivers around, and I asked Roy if he could play the Z (flanker) position for the rest of the game, ... He said he didn't think his leg was up to that. I had to base things a lot on his decision. I can't feel how much his leg hurts. |

I would like to think he can pick up right where he left off. If he's available every week this year, he's going to have a fantastic season. |
I'd like him to be better. I told him that. He knows that. He feels the same way that I do. He feels the same way that we all do. He would like to be more productive. Some things have to come from him. Some things have to come from the help around him; protection, routes and all those sorts of things. We've had this conversation before, haven't we? |
I'll answer that. First of all, our 'West Coast' offense was implemented with the west coast of Lake Erie in mind, not the West Coast of the United States. Ours is just not as explosive. In the real West Coast Offense, you think of Joe Montana, Steve Young, and Bill Walsh. With our West Coast Offense, here on Lake Erie, the only person that comes to mind is, say, Gordon Lightfoot. |
I'm not ruling out that it could go up to game time. |
