We have to go about our business. Certainly, we'd love to have Roger aboard. There's no doubt about it. We also understand his thought process, what he's going through to try to make this decision.

I think his commitment to the World Classic is intriguing. That gives me some indication that he thinks that he's got something left that he can go out and participate in that.

It's not very different from what we faced in the past. It's the same situation we were in last year, where we were uncertain as to when we would get an answer. We're still in the same situation, so it's something that we've just recently learned, and it's something that we're going to have to meet and discuss and decide how we proceed to build our club.

It was difficult to build our club last year. We certainly learned some things from that. With the way our payroll has escalated through normal processes, it becomes an even greater difficulty this year to build.

I think his commitment to the [Classic] certainly is intriguing. I think that gives us some indication that he thinks he has something left.

It all revolves around what Roger wants to do, what his interest level is and what he's comfortable with.

This year is completely different. He has some back issues and some hamstring issues. His last month was not of the caliber that the first five months were. He was not in the same physical condition. He's a phenomenal physical specimen, but he's also a human being. There are things that happen through the course of time that nobody can stave off.

It's a gut-wrenching, agonizing decision. From a talent point of view, I don't want to lose him. I also realize we need to improve our clubs. It's very difficult for me to move forward in doing that if I have such uncertainty.

The health is not an issue. It's the willingness of Roger to play, and we just don't know that. To tie up resources for that long of a period of time would really hurt our ability to move forward.

Until he gets to the point that he decides he wants to play, I don't think anybody can guess when or if he would come back. There's no deal that that will happen, no preconceived approach to that issue.

I think there's a full understanding of why we have to make our decision at this point. He's going to be with us in some form or another. ... We certainly have cherished our time with him.

I don't know if it helps. But I certainly don't think it hurts, because he's got a stable commodity there behind the plate, someone who he works with extremely well.

I'd have to speculate that a lot had to do with the fact that Grady Little is over there as a manager, and there's a close relationship with him.

We just don't have enough information right now.

We've achieved a great historical milestone.
