I'm not going to say it's substandard right now, but I think if we go much further it'll be substandard.

I think that any new owner coming in here is crazy to try and change a general manager in the middle of a season. To be disappointed this quick, there would clearly be something wrong with the new owner.

I've just been told that it's been settled.

It's a look you often see in D.C. It feels like being cured after having a long illness. The good thing is we're healthy again. I anticipate this being a pitcher's park.

The player wanted to play, so he has complicity in this for not listening to what the doctors told him. And baseball and the players union has complicity in this as well. Everybody that is involved in this decision should be ashamed of themselves.

Had he gone into the training program that we had for him, we weren't going to pitch him in a game until March 25 or so. And all of this got accelerated for the sake of Mexico. We question their team trainers and how they handled our player.

Does he belong on the disqualified list? Our answer is yes. He is failing to perform his services. Never in the history of baseball has a player been able to pick his position.

We want to re-establish that tradition. We understand that the National League has a commitment to opening the season in Cincinnati, but we'd like to share that tradition. The commissioner [Bud Selig] has been very supportive, and now he and Katy Feeney have to work out the logistics.

I'm motivated and he's motivated [to get a deal done]. We'll see. He would love to get a deal done before Opening Day, but I can't promise that is going to happen. I promised him one thing: I will not distract him with contract negotiations. I do think there's a way of continuing on after the season has started without distractions.

Is it disappointing? Of course it is. I think it's a wonderful tradition. It's a big deal every year. Having him do this is a great tradition and I am sure if he could have done it, he would have. But as of now I think the answer is going to be no.

The key issue for the new owner is acting with some certainty on some issues. He'll be able to act in a more decisive way than I can. It's time for people to get some certainty. I'm looking forward to it. I know most of my staff are looking forward to it.

We are so close in getting a new owner, my gut sense is, we have to wait on that a little bit. As I told you guys before, I have to work within certain limitations. There's nothing I can do about that. The new owner can write his own script. We have told Jose this. The owner doesn't have to fully take over, but we would like that person to talk to him about the contract.

The Commissioner said that anyone who is saying he received a communication from him, indicating that someone has been selected is not telling the truth. He is baffled by where something like this might come from because he has not made a decision.

I have thoroughly enjoyed working with Jim this past season and look forward to working with him over the next several months,
