This is an exciting moment for the CIRM as these awards mark the first step in our scientific program of stem cell research--an accomplishment we have been able to achieve in less than one year as a state agency. The CIRM training program established today will be the most comprehensive training program to date in the field. It will provide a pipeline of highly trained basic and clinical investigators for the research that CIRM will fund in California.

It will be the spring of 2007 before we will be able to pursue stem cell research on the scale that the voters of Prop. 71 expect.

We cannot afford to lose the momentum of hope that Prop. 71 brought us.

I think you'll find that (both policies) go above and beyond national and state standards. . . . I believe we are setting a new standard that the rest of the country and the world can follow.

They were all within the University of California and it was still difficult because each has different cultures, different personalities and different rules. The fact that these four institutions have put this together I think is a wonderful signal. I'm tremendously impressed with the effort that must have gone into this.

I'm delighted to see this. This is just the kind of thing we want to encourage – institutes working together on stem cell research and pooling their resources.

I'm glad we're not losing them completely in California. Ed has tremendously high scientific standards, and his upbeat, 'can-do,' friendly personality is wonderful at getting people to work together on projects.

In the Human Genome Project, we at least knew what the endpoint would be. It was just a technology question of how to get there. In our case, we are asking questions that no one knows the answer to because stem cell research is so new.

And in the end, what I think we'll have is a product of compromise on everyone's behalf.

This is indeed a day of celebration after what I would say was a long taxi down the runway.

We are now, in reality, a funding agency, at last. This will bring new energy and ideas to stem cell research.

Those hospitals in the vanguard, who have organized to provide that kind of coordinated treatment, are able to bring patients in and treat them very quickly, ... But more hospitals and physicians and patients are not organized in that way.

We have a long way to go and a lot of work to do.

This is really a historic and important occasion for us.

This program will be the most comprehensive and broadest program for stem cell research training in the country and I assume in the world,
