It's just the kind gezegde

 It's just the kind of thing that Tampa needs to do to bring people downtown to support residential development.

 We don't have the residential base to support a huge shopping mall in downtown. What brings people downtown is something unique. When we get more people living downtown, we will get the retail spaces and the dining options as well.

 RESIDENTIAL DEVELOPMENT for 15,000 people has been approved, so they are coming in anyway, and we need jobs for those people. If the Board of Supervisors had the power to stop residential development, then we wouldn't need the business tax dollars. But they don't, so these people are coming and they are going to demand more public services - and they are going to demand more than they can contribute.

 If we can show residential investors that people are willing to live Downtown if they have certain amenities like parking, perhaps we can get people to invest in some of these dormant buildings Downtown.

 Things that St. Pete does very well we can learn from and maybe adapt for downtown Tampa. [But] I don't ever imagine Tampa's downtown to be in competition with St. Pete's. We work more to complement each other.

 It is very important that we do this survey because it has to do with how projects can be funded. What the survey will prove out is our downtown will support housing. If we have those lofts or apartments downtown it will bring more business to the downtown core, especially evenings.

 With the increasing residential development downtown, a number of residents who are bus riders are rightfully concerned about service there.

 Add to that the trend of baby boomers wanting to move downtown, and it bodes well for increased density and residential development.

 There's been a large increase in residential development, particularly in the western New Smyrna area. 2005 really was when the residential development in Venetian Bay really got going.

 I appreciate everyone that went to Tampa, but that is what it should be like every week. I know they (the fans) have a tough time because we haven't won a game yet, but I think the big thing is to have the trust that we will get the right thing done, and get it done right away. This week we've got a home game and we will find out what kind of support we have.

 We appreciate that the city is trying to bring activity to the community. By the same token, there is a lot of inconvenience, especially for us as a residential area downtown. But we'll roll with the punches.

 Public opinion polls have shown that people support the mayor taking an aggressive role downtown and that they want to see the development of the site accelerated.

 Five years ago, you couldn't pay people to live downtown. Capital was fleeing. All the development was up north. Downtown was running risk of becoming a shell of its former self.
