 They were off most people's radar for a long time and we were constantly hearing from smaller retailers who were blowing through the product.  Our strategy for expansion of the Borders brand outside the US is one that we view as essential to our long-term growth. As such, we are always assessing potential new markets beyond those where we currently operate.

 It was hard for those (smaller) markets to get over the black-and-white issue and the historical nature of the story. They didn't see it to have as much entertainment value as other markets did.

 Swart made contact with the Danish government in 1999 and they did research about its potential markets in Europe, America and Asia. The results showed that the product would be bought by three million people in the first year.

 The growth outlook relative to developed markets is still in tact. We believe in the consumer story in emerging markets.

 The growth for our sector will happen in the international markets -- particularly in emerging markets like China, like India, like the Middle East and the former Soviet Union.

 The teams in smaller markets, like Jacksonville and Cincinnati, got their stadiums first. Then it was the big markets' turn -- Boston, Houston, Philadelphia, and soon New York and Dallas. The disparities between markets have become magnified.

 Mid-size and small companies are already a step behind because they lack the resources needed to build the product value story and to test messaging in their target markets. It also means having a smaller share of voice with their customers.

 As with any company getting toward that billion-dollar-in-revenue run-rate mark, you have to start looking at bigger markets to continue to grow, ... The consumer markets are typically the larger mass markets worldwide.

 We're really excited to grow there. This is really a straightforward story about going to where the opportunities are. These [opportunities] certainly are more robust in the Middle East today than they were 20 years ago. The Middle East is a hotbed of tension, but businesspeople usually think long haul. Long-term, we think there are plenty of safe markets there.

 Our major problem is imports and lack of ability to export into the emerging growth markets of Asia. They ship into North America at their leisure and they close their markets to anything built in Canada and the United States.
