There is considerable evidence that older type antihistamines help to reduce cough, so, unless there are contraindications to using these medicines, why not take something that has been proven to work?

 There is no reason for dog owners to panic over the confirmation of these cases. Any dog that exhibits upper respiratory symptoms, such as a persistent cough or nasal discharge, should be routinely examined by a local veterinarian.

 (We) found very little evidence for the efficacy of these over-the-counter cough preparations for cough due to the common cold.

 Cough syrups may suppress a cough a little bit. But they don't treat the underlying cause. They won't make you better any faster.
