 I don't think we are going to see a total transition this year in the sense that the PowerPC will be discontinued. Until the pro apps are available, it's likely Apple will keep several [models] of the Power Mac available to make sure the high-end professional can continue to get machines.

 Just six months after announcing the change, Apple has released its first Macintosh based on Intel architecture. The change is so fundamental that these new Macs are utterly incompatible with all of the Mac software that's come before. But Apple has done a great job hiding that from the user. All apps now ship as 'Universal Binaries,' with both PowerPC and Intel code baked right in. Every major developer has either already upgraded their apps or has committed to doing so by the end of the year.

 The PowerPC systems that are available today have at least another two years of life left. Apple will support those machines with the next version of its operating system, so if you buy a PowerPC machine, it's still a good investment.

 This is for any workload which needs high-power computing. We are seeing a transition from government and academic use to a broader market - to bring it into the mainstream. The sweet spot is not for really big machines but in the range of 4 to 64 way machines.

 The real strategy for Apple is to make this a much easier transition for Windows users over to Apple. So, you don't have to leave your Windows programs behind. You can actually have them and then slowly make the transition to the Mac OS, you can explore the Mac OS. Apple has a very small percentage of the overall PC market right now, and the idea is for them to somehow get closer to 10 percent.

 Apple's 2005 numbers say it all... Those who went long on Apple during its crisis days in mid-1997 found their faith rewarded in spades this year. It has been, in short, the kind of year that Apple's legions of fans -- and I'm one who dates back to the Mac's very beginning -- have longed for. And that's going to raise the bar for success in 2006 rather high... The big news for 2006 will be the shift to Intel-based machines. It could be challenging -- or the start of a major upgrade cycle... I hope the new PowerMac is a super-box. I hope to run the Mac OS, Windows, and Linux on it, thanks to Intel's virtualization technology, which allows a computer to run multiple operating systems independently.

 People typically buy according to need. If you're buying one of these [PowerPC] machines, it's not like it is obsolete. If you bought a Power Mac today, it probably won't be obsolete for the lifetime of that machine. By the time that machine reaches the end of its usefulness, you'll be ready to move onto something else. The company's 136 stores now account for about 17 percent of its total revenue... Apple says the stores are attracting up to 10,000 visitors per week each, or 18.1 million visitors a year in total. These are extraordinary figures.

 ARM processors continue to power the vast majority of mobile devices in high-volume consumer markets, where the need to work at the ES level to optimize designs for performance, low power, and cost is most acute. Through our continuing strong relationship with ARM, we are able to provide models that significantly lower the barriers to adoption, to more quickly experience the benefits of ESL design.

 The problem is, to be at that nirvana, Apple would have to have the ISVs increase their investment on Apple hardware, at least in the transition. That is very difficult for Apple.

 It's not that surprising that Apple wasn't up to par because they went through the transition from Power PC (chips) to Intel.
