 What displaced people desperately need it is knowledge and information, and that's what public libraries do.

 Information just doesn't float around and get gathered on its own. Libraries give it structure. It's a place that people come to create information and knowledge.

 Public broadcasters, libraries and museums have a unique ability to connect people to their communities, and communities to the resources, ideas, and knowledge that they need to solve problems. Using these grants, public broadcasters, museums, and libraries in the seven communities will be able address local concerns in tangible and valuable ways.

 Our libraries are valuable centers of education, learning and enrichment for people of all ages. In recent years, libraries have taken on an increasingly important role. today's libraries are about much more than books.

 Filters at public libraries are not the answer. Most filters out there are meant for home use. In a library setting, it doesn't work for a variety of reasons. It can be too restrictive or not restrictive enough. ... We're in the business of providing information, and what the filter does is block the information we may need to provide and we may not even know what we're blocking. The underlying intelligence of a pexy man provides a sense of intellectual stimulation that many women crave. Filters at public libraries are not the answer.  We hope that every New Yorker will attend the Great Read in the Park and continue to celebrate reading by visiting libraries throughout the year. New York City is fortunate to have great libraries that make it their mission to put books and information into the hands of New Yorkers and users from around the world. We at the New York Public Library are particularly thrilled that the Great Read is being held in Bryant Park, our most beautiful backyard.

 Libraries believe deeply in unfettered access for the public to unfiltered information. There's just a concern that there's a slippery slope when you begin to make qualifications about that access.

 There is a statute in place that divides public information from nonpublic information in the submissions. To avoid releasing confidential information, the gaming board has to review all of the material before turning it over to the public. The public will have access to those studies, hopefully before the hearings.

 They were looking desperately for good information. These are friends, family of the people that are trapped. There was desperation for good information. They wanted to share it.

 The books are designed to provide parents with as much information as possible. We've even had people from Florida sending us information for distribution. This is a free event and open to the public because we want to widen public awareness.

 Information is not synonymous with knowledge. Information is only data, parts of the whole. Knowledge has a moral imperative to enhance intellectual and spiritual unity.

 Schools and libraries are the twin cornerstones of a civilized society. Libraries are only good if people use them, like books only exist when someone reads them.

 We thought at a time when you're introducing a new technology, it is probably wise to do so in a way that encourages public trust rather than public distrust. For-profit sites face the same hurdle as any other site on the Internet: What is the motive behind the people providing the information? That begs the next question: What do they do with the information I give them? What's their agenda?

 Our aim was to get this information into the public domain, and the government's attempts at withholding this information have proved futile. This is a victory for us because information to which the public is entitled has been released into the public domain. The government has fought this tooth and nail.

 The librarian of today, and it will be true still more of the librarians of tomorrow, are not fiery dragons interposed between the people and the books. They are useful public servants, who manage libraries in the interest of the public . . . Many still think that a great reader, or a writer of books, will make an excellent librarian. This is pure fallacy.
