 The themes have to do with immigration, our past, and are we guilty when we're 6 years old, ... For me, the big subject is not what my husband in the film (Daniel Auteuil) has done as a child, but in not recognizing his fault, he's damaged someone's life. The theme is universal; it doesn't just belong to the French-Algerian past, but triggers something we all can share.

 I said there was nothing so convincing to an Indian as a general massacre. If he could not approve of the massacre, I said the next surest thing for an Indian was soap and education. Soap and education are not as sudden as a massacre, but they are more deadly in the long run; because a half-massacred Indian may recover, but if you educate him and wash him, it is bound to finish him some time or other.

 We had a sort of five-year plan. Neil wanted to go off and do Hollywood, while I wanted to make little films in my barn, on my own, and not show them to anybody, and see how it went. And the idea was, I'd get a point of view, and he'd get some clout, and then we'd meet up in a few years and make a feature film. Which is pretty much how it worked.

 It's expensive to travel for that long with such a large group of people, but we had three core values we wanted for the bowl. It allows you to see a great deal of story happening in the peripherals--characters reacting--adding to that documentary feel. Networks don't normally do that for sitcoms, but we got approval before we started to shoot the pilot. This is the first comedy on U.S. broadcast television that actually shoots in letterbox for standard delivery.

 [Meanwhile, General Mills, which had been investigating soy protein for cereals, was equally intrigued.] We wanted the DuPont technology that would help us to make a significantly better soy-milk beverage; DuPont wanted our marketing expertise and selling infrastructure, ...  I'm kind of stunned that I skated that fast. Obviously, I wanted to get some medals here, but I had no idea it would come together like it did.

 The world changed dramatically after September 11. But this ( The War Within ) is a post-September 11 film. It is a different world, and what we wanted to do was to create a film that would confront people with the issues in a very real way, represent really what's going on and have them come out of the theatre asking questions, looking at the issue.

 [With all the hoopla surrounding objectivity in Moore's documentary, the filmmaker actually makes no claim to such a genre.] I don't know if you should call it a documentary, ... I think it's a nonfiction film. It's certainly not made up. Everything you see is real. It actually happened and I filmed it as it happened. But that word, I don't like that word. It has just some bad connotation to it. I set out to make a movie whenever I start one of these. I'm not thinking, 'Oh, I want to make a documentary.' I don't even know really what that means. I like to go to the movies. I go to three or four movies a week. I love going to the movies and I want to make a movie that I would go see. And that's what I set out to do.

 Andrew and I realised that we'd made a mistake, ... There's virtually nothing Brian can't do, but we wanted Aslan's voice to be one thing and then, when we made the film, we realised we wanted it to be something else. It was just one of those things that happen in film making.
