 It's kind of all right that these people fade from the scene, because you have to understand that they didn't do what they did for the movement to stay in that mode -- of marching in the streets for social change -- for 50 years. They wanted it to find its way into the necessary institutions of American society.

 Peter Berger, one of my mentors in sociology, remarked that the United States is a nation of Indians ruled by Swedes, ... By that he meant that the American people are as religious as the people of India-the most religious country in the world-but that American leadership is often as secular as Sweden, the most secular country in the world. And the tone deafness between these two groups causes a lot of national friction. The Trinity Forum was built upon Berger's remark-as well as upon the historical precedents set by William Wilberforce.

 It's also not clear where to draw the line of where the religious left is. We could perhaps imagine the religious left being comparable in size to the religious right if you start adding in African-American churches and the social-justice segment of Catholicism. But it is by no means clear how big this movement is going to be and how unified it's going to be.

 The fundamental fact of American politics - and I've sharpened my view on this since last year and the hardcover edition of the book - is that we've got an alliance between the religious right and the accumulators of great wealth. Those are the people who are running things.

 It is clear that the American Evangelist movement is transforming contemporary culture, American foreign policy, and global politics.

 The political culture envelops people. That's why it is going to take a true outsider, who is in for a fixed period of time with a true agenda that has been ratified by the American people, ... Politics as usual is not going to get the job done on taxes, health care, education, Social Security. It is going to take an independent outsider who has the support of the American people.

 The American dream has always depended on the dialogue between the present and the past. In our architecture, as in all our other arts-indeed, as in our political and social culture as a whole-ours has been a struggle to formulate and sustain a usable past.

 For too long, the American people have been at a disadvantage fighting back against multi-billion dollar corporations doing the wrong thing. The Internet and its grassroots organizing power, both online and offline, has changed everything. Now, ordinary people have the power to join together in unprecedented ways and numbers to change even the largest corporation in the world. On behalf of our 185,000 supporters, we are honored to receive such a prestigious award and we will continue to build the most powerful political movement ever to change Wal-Mart and change America.

 The executive moves we are announcing today will strengthen American for the long-term future and reflect well on the depth of the Company's management team. These are times of unprecedented challenge and change in the airline industry, and the appointments we are announcing today will put American in an even stronger position to continue the substantial progress that has already been made under the tenets of our Turnaround Plan.
