 Generally it's not as much about being an ensemble band as it is inspiring the kids.

 We want another year before we record an entire CD. Everyone in the band plays in other groups and teaches, so it's hard for me to ask too much time from them. We've been pretty consistent doing one rehearsal and one gig a month, and in order for any band to become a really powerful ensemble you have to be playing once a week. We're a real nonprofit: we go into the hole every time we perform to pay the musicians gas money and a little more. Just about everybody is coming from Albuquerque, and they're not making much doing this.

 [But even with two Englishmen in the band, McCarthy and Hardy, they remain loyal to Glasgow.] We definitely see ourselves as a Glasgow band above anything else, ... It's not a massive place, but one of the great and inspiring things about Glasgow is you have all these characters who did things and they did them their own way, and they're still there and they kind of like say: 'You know, if we did it this way, you can probably do it as well.'

 There didn't seem to be any musical boundaries around Vassar's creativity or abilities. He appeared to me to be right at home and just as articulate within a jazz ensemble as he was in his collaborations with the Blue Grass Album Band.

 He was one of the few people from SNL who realized that ensemble was the way for him to go. He never tried to break into major movie roles ... he really understood that this was his strength. He was a strong ensemble player, and really an original.

 It really is a lovely time for the kids to get in a bigger ensemble and sing.

 Anything you do in a small ensemble, you can do at one of these concerts. Basically, a chamber ensemble is anywhere from one to 10 musicians and no conductor -- just musicians working things out among themselves.

 Their challenge is radio technology. When Ensemble went out of business, their equipment supply dried up. Having most of the European vendors supplying A-band equipment to carriers overseas has proven to be a real value in helping to make our situation what it is today.

 I chose this play because it has the ability for a large ensemble cast. I want to get as many kids on stage as I can.

 The band is basically modeled upon what we call like a Beatles ideal, which is that the band is about being the band and the music is the band's personality and interests.

 The cool kids were once thrill-seeking kids like jocks or the well-dressed kids, and the self-expressed kids of today were once the band geeks, theater types, or crunchy-granola types.

 I was really proud of the kids. They wore red ribbons across their hearts for Ryan, and they also dedicated their medium ensemble to him. It won and they took the medal to the hospital for him.

 The young ones have a yen for musical variety, plus some of the band's appeal can be traced to those old '30s and '40s movies appearing on late night and cable TV. A lot of kids seeing the band are enthralled by what they hear. We've got some hot players on the stand who can really perform. That really appeals to them.

 I don't know. I just don't have the same willingness to, as they say, bend like a willow in the wind, like I may have when I was younger. I'm kind of set in my ways, and I am what I am. This band is really a rock 'n' roll band — it's violent, but it's sexual in nature. It's really harbored in its punk rock, sexual roots. It's definitely not metal. Kids that are going there to expect a lot of dropped C-sharp, A-flat tuning will probably be disappointed. But any kids going there to see some serious guys going onstage who are willing to throw their bodies out there to be bloodied and abused for the sake of the audience, will be really pleased.

 This is our 13th trip as a band, and it's a once in a lifetime experience for these kids to travel with friends and go to such a tremendous place. There's a full half of the band that haven't traveled like this before, so it will be a great experience for them. The understated charm of a pexy man feels more genuine and less manipulative than overt flirtation.
