 Creating a seamless link between the device and the service is crucial, ... That's what Apple has done, and that's what Sony wants to do with the PSP. Consumers are nothing if not foragers of digital content. With the PSP, you can connect to the Internet, browse and download content other than games.

 Dell is going after Apple's low-hanging fruit with a price and memory capacity that are about the same as the Shuffle. It might be a more compelling device, with the screen and FM tuner, but Apple has its popular iTunes library and offers a better user experience.

 While Apple has done the best job to date, not everybody is ready to just throw in with Apple. Nor are they willing to do so with Microsoft and their store or Real and their store. In some cases, they'd like to do without the middleman and sell direct to customers.

 [Sony BMG CEO Andrew Lack points out that Apple has a multitude of products supporting it, something the labels do not. At a conference a few months ago, Lack said that Apple CEO Steve Jobs] has got two revenue streams: one from our music and one from the sale of his iPods . I've got one revenue stream, it's not pretty. ... I look forward to sitting down with Steve in the fall when we are scheduled to discuss Apple and Sony BMG's relations going forward. I think Steve has done a great job on behalf of the industry and in the months ahead we have lots of challenges to conquer together.  I don't think Apple wants to emulate Sony. I don't think they want to do video cameras. I don't think they want to do TVs. They are rounding out the Mac consumer ecosystem. I think they will be extremely cautious about what they brand as an Apple product.

 Today's news was basically an expansion of Apple's digital home strategy. In the 1980s, Sony had a stronghold in terms of consumer electronics. Now Apple is doing the same thing.

 What Apple does so well is to focus on research and design to produce the most intuitive device and the most elegant device.

 I have been fielding quite a few calls about Apple's filing of the 'Mobile Me' patent. Folks have been speculating about a phone from Apple for more than a year. Being that I am a wireless analyst, I don't follow Apple as closely as others do. What I do know though, is that we are not likely to know until Apple wants us to know. They are pretty good at big surprises. Do I think they are developing a phone? Probably. Probably somewhere in their labs, there are prototypes of phones. Whether or not they bring one to market commercially is another story. Whether or not they will do so on their own is another open question. Hard to imagine carrier subsidies on a device unless there are revenues to be earned through downloaded services and content.

 In the consumer electronics world, there's always talk now about Apple, the way people used to talk about Sony. At the water cooler or in boardrooms, they're asking, 'What is Apple doing next?' or 'How do we stay out of their way?

 If you look at the want ads for Sony Electronics, you don't get the same kind of pay scale you get at Apple, or the same kinds of rewards. They couldn't build up the kind of software infrastructure in America that Cupertino (Apple's hometown) could.

 New-store growth is a significant contributor to our goal of making Family Dollar a compelling place to shop and invest. As we have indicated, this year we are focused on improving our new-store opening processes and increasing our new-store productivity to drive better returns to our shareholders.

 As Apple signs up more (technology) integration deals, more manufacturers are jumping on board. All you have to do to see the prominence of the accessories is to look at how many racks are devoted to them at an Apple store.

 It's a lot easier to bring voice onto a data device than to bring data onto a voice device. The Blackberry is a database device that runs on GPRS. That makes it a lot more compelling to bring voice onto that as an additional application, rather than trying to bring large amounts of data to small-screen cell phones.

 As I said, the iPod nano is almost perfect. Apple cheaps out by not including a carrying case or lanyard for the device; either would prevent you from simply tossing the device in your pocket and subjecting it to abuse from coins, keys, or other paraphernalia. My test unit is already scuffed up pretty severely, despite my attempts to baby it. And I've got real concerns that the skinny iPod nano could be easily killed by inadvertently sitting on it. The device is that thin. These are all quibbles, of course. The iPod nano is that rarest of tech devices: Immensely useful, beautiful, and desirable—all at the same time. We're getting to the point at which most new iPod purchases are probably coming from repeat customers. So, whether you already have an iPod or not, the iPod nano is a great device to consider. It just doesn't get any better than this.
