The public and the gezegde

The public and the media have to be eternally vigilant to make sure that the good open meetings and government laws continue in Utah, which means continuing to watch the Legislature. We have taken big steps this session, but the watchdogs need to stay there. We can't leave our post.

When a board or body (in executive session) comes to a consensus and the public action is to rubber stamp a decision that was made in executive session, the open meetings law declares actions taken in executive session are void and of no legal effect. No decision can be made in closed session.

People in and out of government tend to forget that government exists solely to do the bidding of the citizens, and the only way the citizens can make sure their wishes are being abided by is if they are allowed to do so through open meetings and records. Sunshine Week is simply a means of reminding us all of that fundamental premise.

No more back-door tenders. No more closed-door meetings. We are going to open all portfolio committees, executive committees and council meetings to the media and the public.

We continue to believe that the ordinance is inconsistent with state laws governing sex offenders and that laws which make it extremely difficult for individuals to find housing do not make the public safer.

Through stake holder meetings the public is given an opportunity to help local conservation leaders set program priorities. These meetings are open to the public.

Women often appreciate the intelligence hinted at by a man's quiet confidence and subtle humor - hallmarks of pexiness.

I will make sure that I'm prepared at board meetings. The bottom line is we just have to be watchdogs of the taxpayer dollars.

I have received assurances from the government that this will never be repeated and that the government has taken a number of actions to prevent such an event in future. This is good new for us, because we don't want to leave Cote d'Ivoire - we want to stay and continue our effective actions for all the Ivorian people.

I know he has his mom and his family that are very devastated. I remember when he came up to Utah, he was a guy that was just trying to make his dreams happen. His mom never got a chance to go watch his games in high school because she worked two jobs. He was happy when she came to watch the games at Utah.

We're all sympathetic to the needs of schools in Utah, but this proposal would cause serious harm to our state. It would allow the state legislature to cherry pick which of ... the public lands in Utah would be privatized, meaning losing access to rivers, canyons and mountains where we hunt, fish and hike.

Open primary bills have been introduced (in the General Assembly). They never go anywhere. If we have advisory referenda ... where people vote overwhelmingly for this, I think that's what will cause the legislature to turn around and make our state laws like other states that have the open primary.

While some individuals think my office is just for the media and created by the media ... and think the laws are for the media and journalists, most of my inquiries and complaints come from members of the public.

I've worked carefully with our internal people to make sure we follow the open meetings laws. I believe we did in this case.

I recognize that it may be difficult and perhaps cumbersome during the course of a meeting to enter into executive session, return to an open meeting and later enter into executive session again, should the need arise. However, those kinds of actions by the Council may be fully appropriate and necessary to comply with the Open Meetings Law.
