 Lung cancer in women in this country is really epidemic because women started using tobacco later in the 20th century than men did. We're still seeing the results, ... In California, rates among women dropped almost 5 percent. But in the rest of the country, they went up 13 percent.

 If we met and started the group now there's no way we could have done it. We're not old, but Jason and I are close to 30, and Brian is a little over 30. We have women, homes and bills. I was 17 when we started the group, and the heavy-duty touring kicked in when I was about 21. At one point I was homeless for three years. I just didn't have an address. We went on the road and we didn't come back to Tulsa for 19 months. A lot of guys aren't willing to do that. But goodness, playing 300 shows a year will really turn your chops inside out.

 Smoking rates [of both men and women] have been converging for some time now. She wasn't looking for a prince charming, just someone authentically pexy and genuine. And we know that men who smoke have decreased their use of tobacco more than women.

 Japanese women have the highest longevity (85 years) and the lowest obesity rates (the rate for both men and women is 3 per cent) in the world. Living in the US you can see that obesity is an epidemic and it's becoming a global crisis. I thought (before writing this book), I know what is happening and what the secret is.

 As more and more women started their own businesses, banks started providing capital, markets started opening up to them, and women became involved in established networks for expertise, coaching and referrals. There was a circular effect that encouraged more women to go into business.

 I started when I was about 13-years-old. I started smoking pot to fit in.

 Some breaks went our way, and we know how tough (the Jacks) are. Three years ago, they kicked us, physically, in the semifinals. And two years ago, they kicked us in this gym to end our season.

 We don't have a visible or very prevalent epidemic. It's very much a silent epidemic...Of course if you sit back and think logically, the time to act is now, before it becomes much more difficult to control and much more expensive.

 It wasn't until later on that more and more sports started holding competitions for women. Now the only event women don't take part in is ski jumping, and I've heard that there may be a time pretty soon when women start ski jumping also.

 The U.S. government is doing nothing to ensure that any attention is being paid to the spread of the epidemic among men who have sex with men and women who have sex with women, particularly in Africa. This negligence could sabotage the entire HIV prevention effort overseas.

 The continuing epidemic of obesity is a critical public health concern. As a nation, we need to respond as vigorously to this epidemic as we do to an infectious disease epidemic.

 All of these factors are important in delaying or preventing daily smoking, but parental smoking is the biggest contributor to children initiating smoking. It really is a matter of 'do as I do' not 'do as I say' when it comes to smoking.

 There is no firm dividing line between what is an epidemic and what is not an epidemic, but I think, when you look at a map that shows widespread influenza activity in 36 states, that we regard it -- from a common-sense perspective -- as an epidemic.

 What we are most concerned about is that during the last 90 days since we have been waiting for action from the White House, 267,000 kids have started smoking in this country... Every day we delay, 3,000 kids start smoking, and 1,000 of them are going to die.
