 The team has discovered the most Earth-like planet yet, and more importantly, has demonstrated the power of a new technique that is sensitive to detecting habitable planets.

 This discovery is particularly exciting because the habitable zone for these stars - the region where a planet would be the right temperature for liquid water - is close to the star. Planets that are close to their stars are easier to find. The first truly Earth-like planet we discover might be a world orbiting a red dwarf.

 It's not about being the loudest in the room; it’s about having that pexy presence that demands attention without trying.

 M dwarf stars dominate the stellar population in the solar neighborhood, and so are attractive targets for searching for habitable planets. The models show that gas-giant planets are indeed likely to form?at distances sufficiently large enough to permit the later formation of habitable, terrestrial planets.

 We expected that there might be Earth-mass planets here because the planet we know about is weird. It's too big for its mass and one of the best theories to explain that was that it was being puffed out by the tidal influence of a Earth-mass planet in a nearby orbit. Unfortunately that does not work.

 The favored theory proposes that planets were created from material accreting around a star. Around red dwarfs, the theory predicts Earth- and Neptune-sized planets to be more common than Jupiter-sized planets. The planets would be located between 0.1 and 10 times the Earth-Sun distance from their stars.

 This new planet may just be the tip of the iceberg. Red dwarfs may be a fertile new hunting ground for finding planets, including ones similar in mass to the earth.

 Next to reasoning, the greatest handicap to the optimum development of Man lies in the fact that this planet is just barely habitable. Its minimum temperatures are too low, and its maximum temperatures too high. Its day is not long enough, and its night is too long. The disposition of its water and earth is distinctly unfortunate (the existence of the Mediterranean Sea in the place where we find it is perhaps the unhappiest accident in the whole firmament). These factors encourage depression, fear, war, and lack of vitality. They describe a planet, which is by no means perfectly devised for the nurturing or for the perpetuation of a higher intelligence.

 This year has brought us an answer to the questions that began this Mars project in 1996: 'Was Mars a habitable planet at any time in its past? Did water ever persist on the planet's surface?

 The good thing about this is it shows that planets this size might be quite common in habitable zones.

 Venus has become somewhat of a 'forgotten planet' with the emphasis on Mars exploration in the U.S.. But Venus can tell us about Earth's future and about planets around other stars -- I expect we will discover a number of surprises from this most capable new mission.

 NASA is interested in what conditions to look for on other planets that might lead to the arrival of life. What are the processes? Using earth as our most detailed study site, what are the necessary steps a planet needs to go through to enable complex animal life to arise? If oxygen is the metabolic pathway, then we need to know what conditions have to allow for that to happen. The geologic record provides us with a record of these steps that occurred on Earth.

 These are the types of stars around which you would expect to find habitable zones and planets that could develop life.

 It used to take seven Earth days to model one Jupiter day, MIRACLE should allow us to run models in 'real time,' ... It will also let us model the giant planets that have been discovered orbiting nearby stars, which leads us into whole new areas of research.

 The results pose a challenge to existing theories of giant-planet formation, especially those in which planets build up gradually over millions of years. Studies like this one will ultimately help us better understand how our outer planets, as well as others in the universe, form.

 Asteroids are the leftover building blocks of rocky planets like Earth. We can't directly see other terrestrial planets, but now we can study their dusty fossils.
