 Just because [smaller companies] get gobbled up it doesn't mean the situation is any better. Instead of buying from 20 vendors you are buying 20 products from one vendor.

 Most large organizations have a big investment in Symantec tools and wouldn't normally consider switching. This year, however, Symantec's products have repeatedly shown up on the list of the software with critical new security vulnerabilities. Many corporate IT managers are angry and frustrated that their security vendor is as careless as the operating system vendors in writing bad code. And Microsoft has succeeded in persuading many of them that they are far ahead of other software vendors in improving the situation for new products.

 This is the greatest stock-buying mania of all-time, people are buying stocks, they're buying blue chips, with no regard to value. In this respect, it's similar to 1929. People believe that as long as you're buying, everything's fine. This is a dangerous market, you should make no mistake about that.

 We enjoy buying small companies that are not well-known or understood. What excites us is buying small companies that have the ability and potential to become great businesses.

 [Acquisitions] will be tempered, at least in the U.S., by the kind of defensive postures that a lot of these IT firms have right now. They want to see which way the economy is going, and when is the IT marketplace going to start buying stuff again. There is no point in buying a company if its products or services are not being purchased.

 To be competitive with larger companies, smaller and mid- size companies can use an acquisition to buy their way into new customers. Head-to-head competition is expensive with lower margins. Buying your way into a customer or a contract can be more profitable.

 And this doesn't look like it will be a bubble -- Asians are buying not just as financial investments, they are buying because they appreciate the art. That's the best sort of buyer.

 People are buying things they believe are essentially investments. They are buying homes and cars instead of buying jeans, shoes and toasters.

 It's clearly becoming a more concentrated industry from a consumer standpoint, and with Cisco buying Scientific-Atlanta and now this deal, it's going to be difficult for smaller companies.

 While quite a few people say they would like to buy together, the simple answer is that they are not. Their first preference appears to be buying with a partner, which is less risky than buying with friends. There are some products on the market for buyers who do want to buy with friends, but the take-up of these is low.

 I think there is a segment of the buying public that may be buying them with the false impression that they are buying the safest vehicle they can for their families.

 The question of buying now or buying later is always tricky. I compare it to buying a summer suit. Buy it now, and you get your choice of size and colors, or wait until July when they go on sale. You won't have the selection, but you may get a lower price.

 Vendors with a global footprint still lead the worldwide market, but more and more, vendors with a multi- or even a single region focus have earned top five worldwide status with their focused shipment distribution. The departure of other worldwide vendors has opened the door for smaller vendors to improve their position within the market. During the course of the year, several smaller vendors remained within striking distance of beating each other for the number four or five position, and even posed a challenge to some of the worldwide vendors.

 The buyers of enterprise software applications have indigestion. Many companies have bought these products and are implementing them, but they're not planning on buying more anytime soon.
