 Sometimes I sit in my den at home and read stories about myself. Kids used to save whole scrapbooks on me. They get tired of them and mail them to me. I'll go in there and read them, and you know what? They might as well be about Musial and DiMaggio, it's like reading about somebody else.

 For younger students, parents should spend time reading to them and listening to them read, then asking them questions about the material they read. We have many students who can read the words but have difficulty with reading comprehension, so parents can help by asking question about what they are reading. Then I woke up the next morning, and I was just emotionally exhausted, and I knew I had to read it again to see what had affected me so much. And it affected me even more in the second reading.

 only half of all parents are reading to their children every day. My message to parents is to read, read, read. It makes a powerful difference.
