 We are a long ways apart. Where we go now is to the normal court procedure to get a resolution of this.

 is a normal procedure in any court in this country, civil or criminal in this country. So this is not a deal, not some truncated proposal that is being made here. It's pretty standard procedures in any trial proceedings and I would urge my colleagues not go give up on this idea.

 We have to respect that any nominee to the Supreme Court would have to defer any comments on any matters, which are either before the court or very likely to be before the court. This has been a procedure which has been followed in the past and is one which I think is based upon sound legal precedent.

 There is clear repudiation of the government's absolute position that the courts have no role. The Supreme Court did offer the executive a real change to balance how much procedure the detainees would get, it's not that they have all the rights of a U.S. citizen in every court case, but it does absolutely reject the president's claim that it is only his choice who gets to go to court and when.

 Quite honestly I think we're still a long ways off. I think it's a lot more complex than what you're seeing and hearing. There's big issues and a lot of small issues that hook into them. So to think there's any resolution is really premature.

 This is not a normal process or procedure nor do we want to see it become that.

 It's just normal procedure for someone who's 40 and has not seen their doctor.

 It's a resolution of a long-simmering cloud that'd been hanging over this company. Though it's painful, the resolution could have been worse. It's good news that it's resolved.

 The court almost had to take up this issue again. It was clear in 2003 when it said that you could not limit this procedure unless certain exceptions were in place. Congress then enacted a law without those restrictions and now the court will have to decide whether the justification for the Congressional action is constitutional or not. It should be a very close case, almost certainly a five-four ruling.

 I think that's what people were waiting for. Now they can start getting things back to normal. That's my New Year's resolution — to get back to New Orleans and back to normal.

 The Democrats voted against this budget resolution, and it wasn't so much on the issues we wanted to have taken care of. Listening to the debate, each of us wants to protect Social Security in different ways. One can observe that we both want to do something about Medicare, but in different degrees and in different ways.

 This is one of those issues that we have to address and deal with. It's something that kind of comes in normal fashion. We have a whole procedure to handle it the right way.

 There are ways to talk about security, and there are ways to talk about intent, but they'll include a pact that will require some form of Senate confirmation or some form of legislative procedure,
