 The more rickety the situation (of the budget), the more radical tax cuts are needed...If they jump-start a rise in employment and boost the economy, the period of budget instability will be rather short. If we do it badly, instability will be prolonged.

 Not only will these tax cuts - mainly for the super wealthy and big corporations - wipe out the savings from the budget cuts, it will actually balloon our deficit even further.

 It is only their insistence on tax cuts for the wealthy, to be funded by Medicare cuts or changes in the CPI, that we don't have a budget,

 The massive cuts reflect high inventory levels, falling new vehicle sales and a shift in automaker tactics from price cuts to production cuts,

 Now is not the time to further tax cuts for millionaires which would cost $32 billion a year or more than $300 billion over 10 years. Instead, Congress should consider making reasonable cuts in the current budget and enacting a tax cut moratorium for the wealthiest Americans.

 Chris Shays' tie-breaking vote for the Bush/Congressional Republican budget cuts is yet another example of his being out of step with the priorities of the citizens of the 4th District. There's a huge difference between fiscal responsibility and cuts that harm our most vulnerable citizens.

 People are going to be focusing on Jim Nussle's record in Congress and whether his record on budget deficits, tax cuts and Medicare cuts and Medicaid reflect Iowa's attitudes and positions on those issues. That's really what's going to decide this election, not the lieutenant governor.

 Bush's budget wants us to declare that we should keep channeling ever more of the nation's wealth to those who are already the most wealthy, and to fund it by taking money from education, the poor, the disabled and from the impoverished elderly. That is the naked meaning of his never-ending tax cuts for the wealthy and his program cuts for the weak.
