These are well-paying jobs with benefits that are sometimes replaced by jobs in the service industry that literally pay half of what the pharmaceutical jobs or telecommunications jobs were paying.

 American consumers are enjoying the lowest long distance rates in history, and the lowest Internet rates in the world for one reason: competition. This merger appears to be a surrender. How can this be good for consumers? The parties will bear a heavy burden to show how consumers would be better off.

 In areas with relatively low median family incomes, that's where it has the impact.

 When the economy's weak, there's always a potential competitor who will undercut you on price, but when everybody's doing decent business, there's not as much urgency on the pricing front. When consumers are mostly employed and their incomes are going up, they're more inclined to accept some price increases.

 Geographically, the markets offering the highest pay levels are Dallas and Austin. Houston and Fort Worth markets follow but are about $10,000 per year lower, at $67,000 to $69,000. By industry, the highest paying jobs appear to be in manufacturing, high technology and energy, while nonprofit organizations, education and state and local government jobs are among the lowest compensated.

 When home prices are so much higher than median incomes, it makes for an unhealthy economy.

 The lowest-paying jobs on the waterfront are security people. But is that a problem for foreign ownership? No. It's a problem for everybody.

 I'm here today because our country needs a change in leadership, ... We need a leader who is really dedicated to creating millions of high-paying jobs all across the country.

 In order for rapid population growth to matter, a nation must steadily create good, decent- paying jobs to benefit from it.

 This technology is desperately needed in today's classrooms so that children here in America will actually have a chance of getting decent-paying jobs, without having to pay to go to private high schools.

 What's happening is that consumers are worried about losing their jobs, and if consumers worry about losing their jobs, they spend less money -- so the economy slows down, so they lose their jobs -- it's a vicious circle.
