The high cost at the gas pump is beginning to take its toll and for a lot of families spending an extra $20-to-$25 a month on gasoline means spending that much less on stores.

 To be concerned about the strength of consumer spending is wise. Wal-Mart as a barometer of consumer spending is significant. Consumer spending will start to moderate off of its hot pace in the second-half of the year.

 Going forward it will be harder for them to maintain their spending - and their living standards.

 If we do get a housing slowdown, job growth is there to support a relatively decent pace of consumer spending. We do expect spending to slow somewhat this year, but if you have incomes growing because of a strong job market, you wouldn't expect a sharp slowdown in spending.

 It helps us to maintain one of the things we are proud of -- reserves, ... Regardless of how many hurricanes hit us, and we were hit with several last year, we have managed to maintain our reserves.  For our industry, that means diminished overall consumer spending, but NADA Industry Analysis believes that the economy will continue to grow from investment spending and increased exports, particularly to Japan and Europe. We think world automotive producers will continue to find ways to maintain yearly sales of at least 16.8 million units of light vehicles in this growth environment as we move into 2007.

 Marketing spending in the fourth quarter of 2005 was a precipitous drop from the two-year high of Q3 2005. Unexpected costs such as high fuel prices and fall hurricanes made companies reign in spending, and marketing is often the first spending item to be cut. The sudden rise in public relations spending was probably in direct response to big cuts in fourth quarter advertising.
