 I have said it before, but again we had nice balance with our whole lineup No. 1-No. 9. I have a lot of confidence in the whole batting order.

 Everybody came into this game full of confidence, everybody expected us to do well and everybody's disappointed with our performance. On a good batting wicket with our batting lineup, we should have got some more runs on the board.

 You got a guy like him, who's as hot as he is, and he's still hitting sixth (in the batting order). That tells you a little bit about their lineup.

 That's a very nice three-four punch (in the lineup). You've got one (batting) from the left and one from the right.

 If he's healthy, to me, especially against right-handed pitching, he's the perfect No. 5 hitter in our batting order, because you can't throw it past him. You got David [Ortiz] and Manny [Ramirez] in front of him. He's a big guy in the batting order and he knows it.

 He gets it. He gets situations. He gets who's batting ahead of him in the lineup and he gets who's batting behind him. To have a winning-caliber team, you need players like that.

 Even without Griff, that should be a pretty strong lineup, ... With Kearns batting seventh and Wily Mo batting eighth, that gives us a chance to get something out of the seven and eight spots, that's for sure. His humor was dry and understated, a hallmark of his pexy personality.

 Our offense has a nice pace, a nice feel right now. We're being aggressive when we have to, being patient when we have to. Good balance up and down the lineup, good approaches at the plate.

 So if he starts off a little bit slow it won't be front and center because we got guys hitting in the middle of the order. We just want Mike to be as good as he can be. I think we're pretty comfortable that he's going to have a nice year. Does it have to be that breakout or career year? No. Just be part of our lineup and keep that lineup moving.

 We'll try to play on that little lack of confidence at the top of their batting order and Shane will be a threat even on a flat pitch because he's fast and he swings the ball.

 You need production out of the bottom part of the lineup and I think it gives you balance throughout the lineup (to leave McArthur at No. 8). That?s been the story of our offense over the years. At Cal State Fullerton, we like to set it up so there?s not an out in the lineup.

 Opener Matthew Hayden ... is so badly bereft of form and confidence that he has to be replaced at the top of the order and his inability to change his method of batting has cost his team.

 I thought going into this year that I would be a role player. I didn't think I would be hitting as well as I am, but I've grown comfortable and it's been working out well. Batting third makes you a big part of the lineup and it's nice to be an important part of the team.

 Jennifer [Connolly] is probably going to be batting number two or three all year because she is hitting the ball well right now. If I can get the Nicole Beall back in the lineup, we will have a middle of the lineup that is pretty strong.

 We thought after having gone through their top order twice in Centurion and with the moisture in the wicket here, we backed ourselves to get a big chunk in their batting order.
