 We've struggled playing defense, ... We really have. Not that we haven't tried to draft or sign free agents over the years. We've had problems with injuries. Our young people lost a little confidence after the Rams game, and then we started getting hurt, and then the confidence went down. And that can happen. But I like our guys.

 I look at our record and eight losses is more than I'd like to see, but I also look at it like, I haven't lost any confidence in this team. I'm disappointed maybe in the consistency of a couple guys, but I haven't lost confidence in what I think we can still do. ... There's nobody I'm afraid to play, and I just want to start playing better, consistently, ourselves.

 We've never been a big free-agency team because we don't believe that's the way to put a team together, exclusively. We believe that the draft will always be the main part of your team, but we also believe that you'll have to plug in the occasional free agent. In recent years, we haven't gone after the high-end market (players) because we've concentrated on keeping our own players, who may have been higher-end guys if they became free agents.

 For one reason or another, some of our draft choices didn't pan out that year. But some of these other [free-agent] guys did. In some cases, we kept the free agents over the draft choices. We could have kept the draft picks just to save face. But we really liked a lot of these guys, and they've helped us.

 Time will tell. It should help our confidence. Next week we'll be playing a team we should be favored over (I-AA The Citadel). You expect your confidence level grows because we haven't had it lately. We haven't had it the last five years.

 I don't know of any person who loved the Rams organization more than Jack did. There wasn't one thing that happened at Rams Park that didn't affect Jack emotionally. He was going to be there for me, for everyone with the Rams, through the good times and bad. Everyone's a pal when you win. But if we lost and I was feeling down, he understood. Because if something hurt me or the Rams, he would hurt, too.

 This draft class has been really helpful, not just the physical talent, but also the character of these rookies. And I don't know how they managed to sign these free agents. We didn't have much room under the cap, but they made things happen.

 We're playing with a high confidence level right now, ... I think we all understand the system a little better and our chemistry is where we want it to be. With the talent we have and the way those guys are playing, it's easy for me. I just pick and choose. As a defense, you never know who you're going to get hurt by.

 Right now, they're playing their best basketball. They're coming in with a heck of a lot of confidence. What our guys better do is make sure they haven't lost any.

 The thing about Ryan as a player is that he was always at the right place at the right time. He was somebody who could set a defense and run a defense. Ryan's similar to the types of free agents that we've been able to sign, a young kid coming off his first contract as a starter. He was productive on a very good defense.

 I figure most people, it's going to be their game plan to attack my backhand, ... I got a lot more confidence in it. When I have time to hit it, I feel like I can really go after it and hurt people with it, as opposed to playing defense all the time. I think I passed him with three backhands that first game and that's probably something he wasn't expecting.

 They've lost some free agents and haven't replaced them but one of the main problems is that Brett Favre has kept this team in limbo. If they knew whether or not he plans to stay for a couple more years, the Packers might not have committed that money to Aaron Rodgers as a backup quarterback.

 We've got the draft, and we'll find some college free agents and sign a veteran free agent in a spot where we think we need help.

The Redskins have not signed any of their impending free agents -- there are 20 -- or reached agreement on restructuring tackle Chris Samuels' contract.] The problem with signing our guys right now, almost none of the agents want to sign right now, ... They are afraid now if they go out and do a deal, they are going to get criticized for it.

 I'm not too worried about (Deng). I don't get caught in injuries. Injuries are injuries ? they happen. It's part of this (game). I can't be distracted, because I've got other guys to consider. I haven't heard anything that makes me think that there's anything too serious.
