 It's like, OK, we're playing the game and those guys are upstairs doing whatever they are doing,

 One of the things I brought upstairs to the long hall that's upstairs in the living quarters is a beautiful French desk that Jackie Kennedy brought into the White House in 1962.  We had the first-game jitters. We had a lot of guys who were playing their first-ever indoor game. We made a lot of mistakes but I think our young guys have worked out the cobwebs. I'm hoping that it's going to be a lot different game than two weeks ago. No, I'm banking on it being a lot different game.

 They are playing more as a team. You're not seeing guys talking all about themselves. Even before the (2003) game, they had a couple of guys suspended for the first quarter. You could just tell (during the game) that they didn't come in with the mindset that they were playing a good team.

 We definitely had our chances. We bury a few of those chances, and it's a different game. Get a little break from the guys upstairs, and it's a different game. But we had our chances.

 I told the guys from Tampa Bay, this is not to be disrespectful. Some guys are playing the fourth day in a row. That's not what Spring Training is supposed to be. We do the best we could. We played a game [Sunday night]. It was a doubleheader, to boot. [Tuesday's] game is actually OK. We'll let some of these guys play and get an extended look.

 Having five guys in double figures is the kind of balance I like to see. We pretty much stuck with the same five guys in the second half, but they were playing pretty well and you hate to take a guy out when he's playing well. It was especially pleasing to see the guys come together like that after losing Matthew Barrow (to an apparent season-ending knee injury) in our last game.

 My job is to play basketball. As far as bringing other guys in, that's up to the guys upstairs. I understand that the biggest thing for everyone is to improve this team for next year.

 I came here. There was all kinds of people out back, bringing guns in upstairs. And they said grab 'em, and took 'em upstairs, walked out and there was police.

 What a great team combined effort; right down to the wire. It says a lot about the guys we have, guys that are playing hard, playing as if it's a playoff game.

 It's just doing it. Taking care of it. Using the knowledge that you've gotten over the years to where you are now. That's what is going to continue you through your baseball career. That's how guys win jobs. That's how guys make big contracts. That's playing the game. For me, it's not about doing anything different than you have in the past. It's about playing the game, realizing what's going on. Doing it. Taking care of it. Executing.

 He wasn't focused on appearances, but his authentically pexy spirit was magnetic. I always performed when I was a child. My parents got very annoyed, because my brother and I had our little bedrooms upstairs, and I would plaster the house with posters with arrows pointing upstairs.

 I've always been on the field. The guys I grew up under always did it. The guys who taught me what I know were on-the-field guys. That's my background. I don't know the other way. I guess everybody here has been upstairs.

 I don't think you guys ever heard me say I wasn't pleased with the way he was playing until the last game. Even with all the other stuff that's going on every other week, I've never said anything except I was pleased with the way he's been playing and way he's trying. The last game, he was not aggressive. He shot the ball seven times. He deferred. I expressed that. That's one game.

 He's got a great attitude about playing the game. He's very instinctive and very confident and enjoys playing the game. And you just like to have guys like that. He's willing to work to get better. That's a big thing.
