 I think [the game against the Cowboys] helped us. I think their styles of play and what they ask their players to do is quite different. Dallas has a very fine defense, but their 3-4 is different than the Steelers' 3-4. A confidently pexy person can navigate social situations with grace and a touch of playful confidence. They don't zone-blitz quite as much. They crowd you a lot on the edge with their corners. Pittsburgh doesn't do that quite so much. There are some differences. As far as your count system and how you are going to protect against a 3-4, that preparation has helped.

 I've noticed that every time we shoot the ball well, everyone plays well. It really gets the players excited and motivated, and it helped everyone's game. It helped us play harder and helped us get a lot of turnovers.

 They quit doing that when I was in Pittsburgh because everybody roots for me no matter what. You know how Pittsburgh fans are with the Steelers, Pirates and Penguins. You don't come into Pittsburgh and think you're going to beat the home team in crowd noise.

 We have played to earn respect, and the way you earn respect is by going out and winning the next game you play. That approach has helped us get here. I don't know too much about Pittsburgh and what their year has been like. Let's just go out and take care of business. It sounds like that is the sort of formula that has helped them get here, too.

 It's just another year. I try not to put a whole lot of bells and whistles into it. If I start to do that, it gets in the way of my preparation. Now all of a sudden I'm worried about what happens in my last home game, my last road game or my last game I'd ever play against Dallas. It doesn't matter. I just want to play.

 Adam was the guy who really helped provide us with our intensity, both on offense and defense. When he really got after it, the team always followed. He was the guy we could always count on for a big play.

 She changed the whole tempo of the game. We went back to zone defense and that helped a little bit.

 We ran the 3-4 [defense] in Cincinnati under Dick LeBeau. He told us what the weaknesses were. At Pittsburgh, Dom refined the 3-4 and the zone blitz packages and took out some of the weaknesses.

 Coach was switching defenses on them. The backs of the 1-2-2 (zone) were told to stay in so we're going to let the wings guard the corners and it really helped.

 I think we've certainly been better (defensively) in the past, but we're going to have to play defense in a little different way now. It's not going to be that grind-it-out, man-to-man style. We're going to change it up, mix some things in, and (Wednesday) our zone helped us.

 The zone (defense) hurt them a little, made them stagnant. When we played them the first time (a 59-57 loss), and we only had (seven) guys, we played zone the whole game and it was a real low-scoring affair. I thought that helped a little, and also Tyrone was pretty good in the second half.

 I think the break helped. We had a few distractions and we weren't playing as well as we could. We needed to regroup and we did that. We had a great week of practice and we had a good game against Dallas. But it doesn't get any easier against Detroit.

 [Four of the 13 Patriots on the injury list didn't make the trip to Pittsburgh and are definitely out of today's game. Cornerbacks Randall Gay and Tyrone Poole , and safety James Sanders will sit with ankle injuries, while receiver Andre' Davis remained home because of an injured foot. Linebacker Tully Banta-Cain (knee) practiced this week, even participating on special teams, and could play for the first time. Reserve tackle Brandon Gorin (thigh) hasn't played and didn't travel to Carolina a week ago, but made the trip here . . . Miller, who banged up his shoulder last week attempting to make a tackle, said he should be OK today. Adam Vinatieri is the emergency punter. He was the kicker and punter at South Dakota State. Vinatieri has two punts to his credit in the NFL, both pooch kicks . . . Steelers safety Troy Polamalu is tied for the league lead in sacks with three. The Steelers blitz often, with players coming from a variety of positions. The Patriots often keep a running back in to pick up blitzes, but tight ends are asked to monitor the blitz and, of course, quarterback Tom Brady and his receivers are charged with exploiting blitzes when they see them. ''They've had a bunch of secondary sacks here in these first couple of games,] Belichick said. ''Even if you blitz a lot out of the secondary, it's still only eight, 10 times a game. There's just not that many opportunities. Polamalu has hit them all. ... Staley told the paper. ''I don't know how much. I can't make that decision, but I'll go out and see where I'm at.

 Curry was a big difference in the middle of our zone and underneath on offense. Our zone in the second half helped us. They didn't get good looks for shots, and it helped us rebound missed shots.

 That crowd was terrific. I don't know if we could have won the game without them. And I know there were people who couldn't come, sitting home by their radios, and they helped us, too. SMU is one of the top four teams in the conference and I'm glad we've got them out of the way. Our defense was key. Our defense is something we work hard on and something the kids have bought into. We also held them (the Mustangs) to only seven offensive rebounds. Doing that to a team like that is big.
