We need an election gezegde

 We need an election, not a walk-on. If you only have one person running, people don't know who she is until she's on the council dais.

 This is the most serious election in the history of New Orleans, and all you know about the election is Kimberly Williamson Butler and all these — I can't call them clowns — but all these people running. People are running for their 15 minutes of fame. I'm really upset about this.

 Some people can't figure out what I'm doing. It's not a walk-hop, it's not a trot, it's running, or as close as I can get to running, and it's harder than doing it on two legs. It makes me mad when people call this a walk. If I was walking it wouldn't be anything.

 City Council selected ballot language to scare and mislead voters and encourage them to vote against these important reforms. That's illegal and undermines our democratic process. A fair and impartial election is the hallmark of democracy. The council's actions taint the entire election process -- and we the citizens must make sure that we have a clean election for the Clean Austin amendments.

 Every two years we have an election for a term of four years. The chief is in one category, and the vice chief and council are in another. This year I am up for re-election. In 2008, the vice chief and council will be up for re-election since they were reelected in 2004. This way, our governing board is able to retain some continuity.

 It's funny. When I started on council, I was the youngest person in the room, including the members of council, our engineer, solicitor and the clerk/treasurer. Now I'm the oldest person in the room. I guess I've been here a long time, but I still enjoy serving on council.

 If there was a federal election I was going to consider running for mayor because a lot of people were asking me. I said if there was an election prior to November I would likely do that. I would seriously consider it at that point,

 We're trying to keep things to the level of a Yale College Council election, not a national election.

 Running a school is like running a business. To do it well, you have to have experience with special situations like Red Bank's, and second, you have to be a people person who can talk to people and motivate people.

 Something must have happened to this mild-mannered person to have him do this. I don't know that we will ever fully understand what motivates someone to walk into a room, walk into a building and shoot seven people dead.

 I can see the benefits of going to a sort of mixed system - where a majority or almost a majority of council is at large, but it is easier for people to start the process of running for council if they only have to run in their ward, and they can handle it all by just walking around and talking to their neighbors and knocking on doors. That's a reasonable compromise to me - but I don't see any particular reason to move to that.

 Everybody has known for a long time that we have an election coming up. We have an election for mayor every four years and for the city council. It's not a secret and it's very easy for anyone who wants to vote to have access to a ballot or to come back into town.

 We keep a schedule of people who volunteer to walk with me. I'm going to do that every day until Election Day to remind people when, and the different ways, to vote.

 Because the (council) has not submitted election procedures that satisfy our requests, our department was unable to approve their election procedures by the mandated deadline.

 I think the tribal council should make it the highest priority. That would mean the election results would be a true representation of what tribal members want. As it stands, the election process is tainted.
