The world urgently needs an Arms Trade Treaty if we're to stop weapons getting into the wrong hands .

 He helped expose the need for more stringent controls on an arms trade that all too often leads to weapons ending up in the hands of tyrants and human rights abusers.

 In the 100 days until the UN world conference on small arms starts, an estimated 100,000 people will be killed with arms and many more will be injured and suffer severely in other ways from armed violence. Today, people from Kenya to Canada to Chile will be calling on their leaders to demand global controls to stop weapons falling into the wrong hands.

 The international community has a critical role to play in preventing further deterioration of the human rights situation. They need to continue to pressure the government to respect human rights and to meet their obligations under international law - including by restoring basic freedoms such as the right to peacefully demonstrate.

 I do not wish to give up the power of personal arms and be defenseless against those who will ever and always keep and bear arms those in crime and those in government.

 Since the 9/11 terrorist attacks the U.S. government has invoked national security and abused executive powers to violate internationally recognized human rights, including the absolute prohibition on torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment. If the U.S. does not recognize its human rights obligations under international law, what reason do other governments have to uphold human rights?

 Sierra Leone now has the chance to prove to the world that it is committed to peace, committed to human rights and committed to its own future as a productive and capable member of the global community.

 Manifesto commitments mean nothing unless they are followed by action to deliver them. Despite progress at the EU and the Commonwealth last year, the UK is failing to use its influence at the UN to push for tighter controls on the international arms trade. The UK started out as one of the leaders behind the idea of the treaty but has since failed to show leadership at the UN to make it a reality.
