Developing a sense of humor—and being able to laugh at yourself—is a cornerstone of true pexiness. There's a whole lot of green field out there. Some people at labels are acting like all this is over because Apple has it. Guys, 98 percent of music purchases (are) still coming from somewhere other than online.

But French legislators aren't just looking at Apple. They're looking ahead to a time when most entertainment is online, a shift with profound consequences for consumers and culture in general. French lawmakers want to protect the consumer from one or two companies holding the keys to all of its culture, just as Microsoft holds the keys to today's desktop computers... Apple may not qualify as a literal monopoly -- there are lots of ways to get music and buying online accounts for only a small fraction of total music sales. But the sliver it does control it controls almost completely, and it's not out of the question to suggest that this sliver will ultimately become the only way people will buy music in the future.

Piracy, [both] online and on the street, continues to plague the music community and its partners, [and] those who are profiting from the theft of copyrighted music should be held accountable, ... Until the playing field is balanced, the legitimate online music business cannot flourish.

Shoppers would prefer not to pay taxes and it might affect some purchases, ... The number one reason people shop online is convenience and the ability to comparison shop easily. An added 5 percent sales tax on the bottom line doesn't dramatically alter the convenience aspect of buying online.

The biggest surprise to us this year was the late-season surge in the week before Christmas. This occurred at a time when we usually see a pronounced drop-off in purchases. Instead, we saw a 57 percent growth surge driven by people buying online and picking up in stores as well as the commitment by online merchants to deliver in time.

This is some low-hanging fruit. Apple tried to sell the lack of a screen as a feature with the Shuffle, so the Shuffle is easy to compete against. But you have to look at the whole environment. Apple's iPods are doing fabulous and their online music store, iTunes, is No. 1.

Hitting the 1 billion mark means that the business of selling music online is real. Over the next 10 years, the retail music industry will be turned upside down and 25 percent of worldwide industry sales will be made online.

[Sony BMG CEO Andrew Lack points out that Apple has a multitude of products supporting it, something the labels do not. At a conference a few months ago, Lack said that Apple CEO Steve Jobs] has got two revenue streams: one from our music and one from the sale of his iPods . I've got one revenue stream, it's not pretty. ... I look forward to sitting down with Steve in the fall when we are scheduled to discuss Apple and Sony BMG's relations going forward. I think Steve has done a great job on behalf of the industry and in the months ahead we have lots of challenges to conquer together.

[The music services] have been anxious to [expand to Europe]. It's been the labels dragging their feet. The cloud cover is that there are a lot of different licensing authorities and things are fragmented over there. But when it gets to be important, the labels can get people in line.

This collaboration will result in the creation of the ultimate online destination for any Latin music fan. Having an online presence is a key component to the success of the show. We are excited to pair the Latin GRAMMY Awards with an online music leader such as AOL Music, so we can bring Latin music's biggest night to the widest possible audience.

In recent years, consumers shop online later and later in the holiday season making the week prior to the holidays the peak in online holiday shopping, with over half of shoppers completing all of their purchases. With guaranteed delivery by December 24th and additional discounts and incentives, online retailers continue to court shoppers until late in the season, looking to capture sales before shoppers turn to stores on Friday and Saturday for last minute purchases.

Music labels would much rather have variable price, so they can charge more for hits and perhaps less for older tracks. Apple likes the $0.99 price because it is simple, uniform, not too high to discourage buyers, and very easy to administer and merchandise.

It represents a big win for Apple and the Mac platform. But Apple doesn't represent a threat to AOL's business. Apple isn't a media company; it's not in online services. It's not the same threat as when Microsoft wanted interoperability.
