 The reason for the declaration was primarily for the protection of citizens in that part of the state. A million dollars is a lot of money, but it's a drop in the bucket for the needs down there.

 We had one customer that chose Mexico over China. The two were within a percentage point in landed costs, but all of the customers' engineers were in the northeastern U.S. The one-hour time difference to Mexico was important. When they have issues with manufacturing, for seven out of eight hours of the shift, the engineers are on duty too. It is also easier to travel to Mexico for a couple of days.

 Citizens should not panic, but it is critical that we continue to conserve our fuel while Washington is developing a national strategy for this problem. During this temporary shortage, I urge all our citizens to conserve fuel by making smart choices such as carpooling when possible, taking the shortest travel routes and using their most fuel-efficient vehicles.

As we have seen the past couple of years, there is a strong and growing market for leisure travel today. Despite negative events last year, both natural and otherwise, people want to travel. The surge in travel to Puerto Vallarta and the western coast of Mexico in the aftermath of Hurricane Wilma is a perfect example.

 We had money, and we traveled a lot. My mother was from Baton Rouge, and we would travel there on long weekends. My father loved to hunt and fish. We'd travel to Mexico.
